Li Jiawei
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Li Jiawei (Chinese: 李佳薇; pinyin: Lǐ Jīawēi) (born 9 August 1981 in Beijing) is a Singaporean table tennis player. Li climbed steadily up the ranking ladders from a mere 18th in 2000 to one of the top 10 players in the world today. She also won the hearts of a nation when she played to a 4th place finish at the Athens Olympics in 2004. Her determination throughout the Games and her efforts to defeat second-seeded Wang Nan captured the country’s imagination.
Li was spotted by Singapore officials in Beijing back in 1995. She started her international representative career in competitive table tennis one year later at the age of 15. At the age of 18, she became a full-fledged Singaporean.
Li is also the key player for the Team, Doubles and Mixed Doubles event, helping Singapore to clinch medals after medals in many Regional and International Games. Her successful partnership with Jing Jun Hong saw them being placed in the 8th position in the Women's Doubles Ranking many years back. The pair made up of Li and Sun Bei Bei is currently ranked 7th in the World.
