The LG Chocolate (also known as the VX8550 or the LG Chocolate Spin) is the upgrade to the popular LG Chocolate (VX8500) music phone for Verizon Wireless in the USA and Telus in Canada. It was released online July 7, 2007 and comes in black, black cherry (red), blue mint (blue), and ice blue (light blue). The phone has many enhancements over the original VX8500 Chocolate series.

[edit] Differences from the Original LG Chocolate
The most noticeable improvement over its predecessor, the LG Chocolate (VX8500), is a mechanical scroll wheel with "trace motion lights" to track the wheel's movements and the ability to press in the 4 compass point directions. This was done in an effort to do away with the VX8500's touch sensitivity problems.
New features also include haptic vibration feedback when using the touch buttons (two soft keys and a speakerphone and clear key), much like those the Motorola RAZR2. In addition, the phone also supports tactile send/end keys located on the keypad (as opposed to on the spine of the VX8500), as well as bluetooth file transfer and stereo headset support.
The phone's music player has a few more features, and users are able to switch tracks in the home screen by using the navigation wheel. It is also approximately .1 inches smaller in all dimensions than the original, and its edges are smoothed.
The phone can also store 3 In Case of Emergency (ICE) contacts that are the 3 most important people you want called in an emergency. These numbers can even be called when the phone is locked with a passcode. The phone also stores 3 Notes under Personal Info in the In Case of Emergency section so you can enter personal information, medical facts, or even instructions on how to return the phone - the notes are free-form with a limit of 500 characters.
The phone also has the same 1.3 megapixel camera as the VX8500 Chocolate, but this time it has zoom, and a 30-second to 1-hour video recorder. Hour-long videos must be saved to a micro-SD card and cannot be sent using Pix/Flix messaging.

[edit] January 2008 Verizon Wireless LG ChocolateTM VX8550 Firmware Update
In January of 2008, Verizon Wireless received the flash software update from LG to upgrade the ChocolateTM to the VX855V03 version of the device firmware. This upgrade prevents the LG ChocolateTM VX8550 from shutting off randomly, as well as freezing up when sending text messages or using other features. The update is free of charge, keeps all your files and information, and usually takes between twenty minutes to one hour to complete, depending on how much information is on your device. The firmware that initially shipped with the unit was VX855V01. Remember to always backup any information on any electronic device before servicing or upgrading.
[edit] Software Updates for Other Verizon Wireless Devices
For some phones/devices, there are software updates online at http://support.vzw.com/phones/. Just choose your phone from the list on that page, and then scroll to the bottom of the phone's support page to see if there is anything under the Downloads heading for your phone. Most Verizon Wireless retail stores can also assist in upgrading the firmware on the ChocolateTM or any other Verizon Wireless handset. Visit Verizon Wireless Store Locator to find the store nearest you. Make sure you ask if the store has the latest upgrade for your phone and whether or not that particular store has the equipment to perform the upgrade; not all stores have the machine to upgrade the firmware on your device.
Verizon Wireless also suggests dialing *228 SEND and then pressing option 2 quarterly, or when you travel to a new area, to update your phone's Preferred Roaming List, or PRL.
Upgrade Tip: To speed up the upgrade process (and to make sure you don't lose anything), move all your pictures, sounds, and songs to a memory card before you go into the store and backup your contacts using Backup Assistant. Once all the media is moved out of the phone's memory, the upgrade will move faster.
