Lexi spent 3 weeks in varioius parts of England throughout the summer of 2007.
For the first 5 days, Lexi stayed in a little village called Grappenhall. Grappenhall is located in Warrington, Cheshire. Lexi stayed in one of the two pubs in Grappenhall, called the The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head. The Ram's head was a cozy little pub located a few blocks out of the central part of town. The service was friendly, and B's room had a nice little view over the cobblestone road in front of it. The Ram's Head is currently undergoing a renovation, and will be open in a few months. Just a few minute's walk away from the Ram's Head is St. Wilfred's Church. The church has a carving on the wall, known as the Cheshire Cat. It is believed to be the inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice and Wonderland. On the way to the Church is a display of real stocks, a common form of punishment to those who disobeyed the law hundreds of years ago.
After time in Grappenhall, Lexi rented a car and drove to Whitby, a historic town. This took about a day. Whitby is a little fishing town on the north-east coast, which is becoming increasingly popular for the tourists. The seafood was excellent. Lexi's favorite restaraunt there was called.
Lexi enjoyed the twin piers and the park with Captain Cook's statue. Also, Lexi visited the Whitby Abbey. It was very unique, with a very special tour guide. There was a walkie-talkie-like mechanism that you can wear around your neck. Different parts of the abbey had numbers on them, and when you pressed the numbers on the audio guide, you listened to a young, energetic monk from the time that the abbey was used telling you about the life in the Abbey at that time. Also while in Whitby, Lexi enjoyed the market by the River Esk. There were lots of little shops that were fun to look around, and Lexi thoroughly enjoyed it.
After staying in Whitby for 4 days, Lexi took a 2-day drive to Penzance. Penzance is well-known for the musical "Pirates of Penzance". Lexi actually had participated in version of it in here hometown right before going to England, and the experience was very exciting. Penzance is a charming seaside pirate town. Two of Lexi's favorite restauraunts there were the Turk's Head and Admiral Benbow's. Both of the little pubs had great food and a dessert unique to England: Sticky/Hot Toffee Pudding. Lexi first experienced it in Whitby, but continued to enjoy it throughout all of the visit to England. Sticky Toffee Pudding is a rich, sweet chocolate cake cube with hot sticky toffee poured on top of it and powdered sugar sprinkled on top. In some restauraunts it was served with fresh fruit or ice cream. Visible from the beach is St. Michael's Mount.
