The other is derived from the Germanic given name Lewis, meaning "renowned, famous battle", and is of English/Welsh origin. Another similar Welsh origin for this name may be a contraction of "Lew's issue" after a fifth century Welsh king. Lewis is also the name of the largest isle in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
