[edit] Welcome to the Opera Project

Hello Lethesl, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

Delighted to see you are posting about opera and you have signed on to the project. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!  -- Kleinzach 17:00, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Der Vampyr

Thanks for adding the poster - I really need to force myself to go through a tutorial on WP images. --GuillaumeTell 18:10, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page move

I noticed you were trying to move Juan Vasquez (composer) to Juan Vásquez. Since there was already content at the destination article, the Wiki software won't allow the move to proceed. I've placed a speedy deletion tag on Juan Vásquez to clear the way; once an admin deletes this article, you can move the original article there using the move tab along the top of the page. Hope this helps, and welcome. --Bongwarrior 00:17, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Okay, all clear, you should be able to do the move yourself now without any problems. If you would rather I do it for you, just let me know. Take care. --Bongwarrior 00:37, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Yep, the redirect on the old page is normal, everything looks good. No hassle at all, glad to help. --Bongwarrior 00:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of Renaissance composers

I have a sneaking suspicion that Jacob de Reis (c. 1540 – c. 1605) (in the "Unknown nationality" section) may be the same person as Jakub Polak (c. 1545 – 1605) ("Polish" section)...? --MrOzik 14:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Ooh thanks, I think the name similarities plus similar dates are enough evidence to remove him *does that* Lethe 14:13, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks...

for adding the wonderful portrait of a wonderful composer - John Bull, I mean! Now I see someone has yet again modified the article to portray him as a Welsh composer, which will need correcting. But I'm going to do a major expansion of the questions surrounding Bull's birthplace. Again, thanks for the pic. Nick Michael 16:47, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Yay! Anything to improve renaissance composer articles is very good (and he's a major one) :D It's strange how most digital versions of that portrait are in black and white... Lethe 17:01, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Roles

We usually start with a list like that in La scuola de' gelosi - which is formatted correctly IMO - and then make tables later to accommodate the role creators, as for example the other Falstaff - so i guess my answer would be that tables are great but really we need the names of the role creators as well. -- Kleinzach 14:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] R & J

I copied that outline from the Dutoit recording. I've also got Gardiner's recording, which can be programmed to play just about any version of the symphony ever devised, but I thought I'd add the straightforward, most frequently performed one first. Glad to see someone else is working on Berlioz too. I had planned to deal with all his works in detail, but I got distracted. I'll see if I can add any more info from the definitive Cairns biography once you've finished. Cheers. --Folantin 07:49, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I'll have a look over the weekend. Thanks. --Folantin 14:02, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
I haven't managed to find that information about Wagner in Cairns yet, but he has more about the composition history (R&J was finished on September 8, 1839) and plenty about the critical reaction. Also, MacDonald confirms that it is in seven movements. Maybe I'll add some of this material once you've finished. --Folantin 10:35, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
The Berlioz biography is another article I promised to fix. I was planning to re-read Cairns (a great book) but I blanched at going through all 1000+ pages. Still, I'll be happy to help out a little later this month. You can be very bold indeed with that article - a lot of it needs a complete rewrite. Cheers. --Folantin 16:36, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Good work. I'll look it over properly when I get the time. I'll have to think about the box. --Folantin 07:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
The Classical Project isn't dead, it's merely playing possum :) (it does tend to be one of the sleepier projects). I've just moved the Symphonie fantastique article myself to the correct spelling. I agree with you about "Harold" (plus I think it should be La damnation de Faust rather than the English title). Those moves might cause more controversy so it might be best to put in a requested move for them. I'll see if I can fix that a little later, unless you want to go ahead yourself. Cheers. --Folantin 08:39, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
I've just read WP:RM again. I think all we have to do is make a request on the talk pages and get consensus there. If nobody objects after a few days we can move them. --Folantin 08:48, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
OK. I'm making the requests on those two talk pages. Just go to them and back me up. Thanks. --Folantin 08:53, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Really thorough work on the bio, by the way. I can't think of anything to add there, except his parents' names and the fact he first met Mendelssohn during his stay in Italy (I can fix that - with references - myself). If you don't mind, I'd like to rewrite the "Style" section (there is a good chapter in MacDonald I can use). Also, I've never been keen on that introduction so I might try to rejig it as well. --Folantin 09:10, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
D'oh! I meant "Musical influences" (which I'll probably rename "Musical style"). I'll take that section if that's OK with you. I might put the information about his attitude to and relations with other composers (including Mendelssohn) in there too. I certainly agree that I don't care about length limitations where Berlioz is concerned (I've been expanding the Rameau article likewise - it's currently 40k and it's going to get even longer). Once we've finished the body of the page, we can use the introduction to provide a short summary of the info in the article (per WP:LEAD). As you know, I've also been working on the individual composition articles (ideally we should have decent pages on all his works by the end of the year). I've done L'enfance du Christ, Les francs-juges and Symphonie funèbre et triomphale and a bit towards Overtures by Hector Berlioz. My next target will be finishing Prix de Rome cantatas by Hector Berlioz. You've already fixed R&J. If you're planning to do some more and want to divide "spheres of influence" we can arrange that. Obviously, if you want to look over "my" articles and add to or otherwise improve them, you're most welcome. --Folantin 09:39, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it's odd. So odd it probably needs checking again (I took that list more or less wholesale from German WP). --Folantin 18:13, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Countess

Thanks, I'll try to do one on Flis and one on Verbum nobile when I have a moment. I also remember reading somewhere about the first performance of The Countess (that the Polonaise opening act III was encored 3 times in a row, I think) but can't for the life of me find where it was... --MrOzik 21:04, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Elgar's 'cello concerto

Good afternoon (GMT -7, that is).
I commented at Talk:Cello Concerto (Elgar) about the movement timings. As you will see I wrote there, they are from the famous Barbirolli-du Pré recording, which because of tempo variations, is not 100% reliable as an average. :) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  21:37, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quick infobox question

Hi. Thanks for your message. The infobox question has been discussed by all three mainstream music projects: classical music, composers and opera. Berlioz is really in the Composers bailiwick.

Turangalila made a detailed case for using infoboxes using User:Turangalila/sandbox/Infobox_composer as an example but the result of the debate was not to use it. The practice of the Composers project is explained on their project page here. Basically people felt that for every good infobox there were 20 bad ones, so the simplest solution was to ban them altogether rather than have time-consuming arguments about each one individually. -- Kleinzach 03:01, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Prissilla Bvnburie

Many thanks for your kind words. There's so much that requires doing concerning the music and composers of this period! Glad to see others are plugging along too... All the best Nick Michael 13:42, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Renaming Berlioz articles

Sure, go ahead (unless you want me to do the moves). BTW I hope to get round to rewriting the "Musical style and influences" section in the Berlioz bio within the next week. Cheers. --Folantin 17:06, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

No, you don't need to go through RM. I'll just make the moves now if you don't mind and get back to you about the Featured Article idea. --Folantin 17:18, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Featured Article: I'm afraid to say I'm a little sceptical of the whole FA process given my experiences there. Too many reviewers can't see the wood for the trees. I'm sure there are enough references (maybe more than enough) in the sections you've worked on, but have you inserted the right kind of dashes and hyphens? LOL. By all means go ahead and put it up as a candidate once we've finished the revision, but bear in mind that I've seen the FA process make articles worse rather than better. For instance, someone will almost certainly complain it's too long - but why should we lose any valuable information for the sake of gaining a Featured Article star? Anyway, let's finish the article first before we worry about FA. --Folantin 17:44, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd certainly remove Davis from that list and I wouldn't add Beecham either. --Folantin 10:41, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] hello

Hi Lethesl, I came across some fine edits from you on some pages I watch and I thought I'd say hello. Since you're interested in classical music/opera/etc., perhaps you'd like to help filling in some missing articles at the Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics (there's about 40,000 of them, so there's plenty to do). It's just a hotlist compiled from various music encyclopedias, but there are so few people working on it the project was recently declared inactive. I occasionally work on it and am trying to encourage some other people so that we can make some progress bringing the daunting list down. If you're too busy on something else that's okay, I'm just trying to make sure people know about it. Keep up the good work! Rigadoun (talk) 03:27, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

The link should be removed. I'm going through the lists now (I'm on page 4) checking the blue links to make sure they're relevant. If you forget to remove a link, it's no big deal since I (or someone else) will check it and remove it later, but if you notice it's always nice. Thanks for your help! Rigadoun (talk) 18:22, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]  ? Wikiproject Somerset

Hi, Have you seen the proposal to create a Somerset wikiproject at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals ?— Rod talk 17:50, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Berlioz Citation

No problem! Hey, I own a copy of the original score for the Berlioz Requiem, and the Treatise on Instrumentation, which are both probably full of citations and information. Let me know if I can help! -Oh yes, I remember reading a segment in the Treatise about Berlioz having to use multiple sub-counductors for performances that large. Do you think I should add that in? --Chopin-Ate-Liszt! 17:16, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A proposal (Berlioz)

I have posted a proposal for improving the Berlioz article on its discussion page. Let me know what you think.--Chopin-Ate-Liszt! 02:44, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GIF -> JPEG

Thanks for trying to replace a gif with a jpeg. I ended up duplicating your work because you didn't mark it with {{superseded|Image:new image name}}. I've now done that here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Berliozpaint.gif and requested an admin delete the duplicate image I uploaded, and... started the process of having various wikis actually switch to your image. Maybe the badGIF template needs to be clearer about what to do? --Elvey 03:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

You are awesome. I will now steal many of your user boxes. Love the Immortal box, too.Navnløs 23:20, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User:Lethesl/UBX/Skepticism

Hi Lethesl, I thought I'd let you know that a bot removed the image from that userbox you made, as it was free use, and not allowed anywhere but on an article related to the subject. The bot replaced the image with Image:Example.jpg, which I removed, so that everyone didn't have that funny image in the userbox. You might want to find a replacement image :) ArielGold 03:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your signature

I notice you sign as Lethe. It might be a good idea to change it to lethesl, or something other than Lethe. There is an active editor and administrator whose username is Lethe. This might cause problems, as you sign as Lethe. Just a thought. I (talk) 23:34, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. Thanks for being so amiable. I (talk) 00:05, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] George Alexander Albrecht

In connection to Furtwangler, I came across George Alexander Albrecht. Besides CD booklet blurbs, do you have any sources for fleshing out that placeholder? Anton Mravcek (talk) 22:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I've looked at the German Wikipedia article, and there's lots of cognates that help me understand what it's saying. Still, there probably are traps I may have been ensnared by, so I'll see if I can find a German-speaking English Wikipedia user who has the time and inclination to review these two articles.
