Description

Letter from Ilkhan Ghazan to Pope Boniface VIII, 1302. Ink on pergament. Original size: 84 cm x 97 cm. Archivio Segreto Vaticano, Citta del Vaticano, Inv-no. A.A., Arm. I-XVIII, 1801 (3). In this letter Ghazan proposes to form an alliance against the Mamluks, between the Ilkhanids on one hand and the Pope and Christian kings on the other. The letter is in Mongolian, the seals are in Chinese. French translation in Mostaert/Cleaves, "Trois documents mongols des Archives secrètes vaticanes", in Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, 15, 1952, pp. 419-506.
