[edit] Objectivity
I have removed the reference to bernardo as a "semen smuggling bastard." While it's possible that he was indeed a semen smugggler born without a father, this is still uncalled for and adds nothing to an otherwise objective article.
- I believe you mean it's possible that he was born out of wedlock. It isn't possible that he was born without a father, unless he's Jesus. —Daelin 14:01, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Quite true -- point taken.
[edit] Shoplifting removed
Took this out: She had openly rebelled against her parents during the school year and had skipped school, engaged in promiscuous sex, and ran away from home on at least two occasions. Her academic standing had suffered as a result. She is also said to have shoplifted and repeatedly stayed out past her curfew.
This info is unnecessary and has no bearing on her kidnapping and murder. The last sentence verges on libel (just *who* is saying that she shoplifted??).
- The authors of Deadly Innocence state this around p. 21 of their book. However, I didn't put it back in during a revision today. I didn't think it was all that important. That she ran away twice prior to her murder matters to her final story, but not that she had done some (how much?) shoplifting. A lot more relevant is that she wore braces, something which helped identify her body. Regarding libel, the legal rule is that you cannot libel the dead (in other words, you can say whatever you like, but not get sued for libel by the dead person's estate). Being dead, Mahaffy doesn't fall into WP:BLP, either. Even so, details of her life should have good verifiable citations. -- LisaSmall T/C 08:16, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Parents
Did they make any public statements subsequent to her disappearance and murder? I'm wondering how they dealt with their actions the night of her kidnapping.
- Her mother, Debbie (Debby? Debbi?) Mahaffey, is quoted in the MSNBC documentary "To Love And To Kill." -- LisaSmall T/C 03:38, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Name spelling, deletion
The deletion discussion in April 2007 ended with "keep." I probably would have voted to merge and delete. The killers' other two victims have their own articles, and possibly all three should be merged onto single subpage of the killer's own pages. That aside, I've found Mahaffy referred to as both "Mahaffey" and "Mahaffy" and can't tell which is the erroneous spelling yet. I set up a redirect from "Mahaffey" to the current article and added citations for five books, a documentary, and a biopic. The whole article needs citations. -- LisaSmall T/C 03:38, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fact problems
The article seriously lacks citations, though I put in as many as I could today from the single source I have handy, Deadly Innocence. Unfortunately, even with that source, there are still several allegations without citations at all. Furthermore, the article currently says the videotapes were destroyed; as far as I know, they were only suppressed by the judge's gag order, not destroyed. Citations to print sources are needed to help clarify which "facts" are the accurate ones. I put the citation request box at the top of the article in hopes of attracting cites from other sources besides DI. -- LisaSmall T/C 08:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- Here are some links that say the tapes were destroyed
- Tapes made by Bernardo destroyed
- Bernardo tapes destroyed, says lawyer for victims' families
- Infamous Bernardo tapes destroyed: lawyer
- I have no idea how to do the citation in wiki markup. sorry!
