I am pleased to create a page for Leslie, one of the 3 Honkettes that sang background for the great Lynard Skynard band. Leslie survived the plane crash in Alabama, but her friend Cassie Gains did not. Their stories should not have ended there. They were real girls with real families.
I never met Leslie, I have never spoke with Leslie....her mother was a cousin of my mother, Laurette Gilchrist. They came to Tulsa, Ok a lifetime ago (c. 1958) and visited my parents. My brother remembers the visit, I was only a couple of years old.
My experience with Leslie is that I went to see LS EVERY time they were in the Tulsa area. I had no idea an intrigral part of music history would soon be part of my history.
On one fateful morning, I clipped out the small article in the Tulsa World, telling of the LS plane crash. I stuck it in my pocket and went out the door to do laundry at my mom's house. As I sat talking with my mom, I pulled the article out and read to her, about one of the greatest bands to ever rock the planet, having had a terrible plane crash.
When I finished, she said in her calm manner, "I think that's the band my cousin Dean's daughter sings in." Her feelings were a family concern, she hadn't a clue of the difference that event made in the world of Southern rock. The concern would pass to me, as we began to hear about Leslie's injuries in the coming months.
I don't know her, but I am thankful she's alive and I've always hoped she found peace in her life.
Your voices live on, just like the music.
I hope you're safe and happy Leslie, wherever you are these days.
