[edit] Character Background
Lester Jenkins is the husband of Mary Jenkins and father of Brenda Jenkins, and the entire Jenkins' clan lives in a Washington, D.C. apartment building, although it was not confirmed in the entire series run. Lester was born in 1940 somewhere in the United States, the names of his parents were unknown. Before Lester married and met Mary, he had a history of short-lived girlfriends including Trish Lamar, who was a waitress at a local diner She dated Lester for a short time, however in one episode it states that on the actual date on January 17, 1962, Lester was driving an car for his then "girlfriend" Trish, and without prior notice led to a warrant, however, Mary, was very furious that Lester never told her that he was hold up for driving a car that his girlfriend Trish drove and own.
Then the following year came in 1963 and Lester and Mary had gotten engaged to each other. They married and moved to Washington, D.C.. During the mid 1960s, Lester found all types of part-time jobs, while Mary was a housewife, and in the early 1960s, Lester discoved success when he became a construction worker, although he was laid off almost every single job, Lester still managed to came out on top. In early 1971, he and Mary became parents when Mary gave birth to her only child, a daughter, Brenda Jenkins. Around the years Brenda had grown older, Lester and Mary and their daughter Brenda all moved to a working class neighborhood in Washington, D.C., and into an apartment building numbered 227.
Now set in the 1980s, in many episodes of the entire 227 series, Lester started not to notice his wife, Mary, and was unaware that Mary wanted to re-create their first anniversary. Lester, basically was starting to notice Mary and her love for him. Lester had graduated from college (the college he had attended was unknown), and still married to his love, Mary and both took full responsibility to raise their only child, Brenda.
Like Most African-American housewives, Mary depends on Lester to always do his best even though its messing up that might count.
