Lesewut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Die Lesewut, German for the reading mania or the reading craze, is a term that describes a period in German history beginning in the Eighteenth century when the number of German authors, books, and readers surpassed that of France to become the leader in published and read literature (i.e. the written word) in Europe[citation needed]. Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther and the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) is considered to be the catalyst to this event[citation needed].
