LEPrecon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lower Elements Police reconnaissance squad, better known as LEPrecon, is the celebrated stealth reconnaissance division of the Lower Elements Police (LEP) in the fictional Artemis Fowl series, written by Eoin Colfer. In the underground world of the fairies, most reconnaissance entails tracking down fairies who wander where they shouldn't, particularly away from the secret fairy civilization of Haven and onto the surface of the Earth.

The Reconnaissance and Retrieval Squads are the elite, 'SpecOps' division of the LEP.

Members of the squad are also called LEPrecons, or leprechauns, the name of which is a pun, and in the context of the books, this is where the term originated. It is also the name of a games convention at Dublin University, of which Eoin Colfer is a graduate, though this may be a coincidence.

[edit] Characters

Listed below are some of the characters in the Artemis Fowl series who are members of LEPrecon.

Captain Holly Short is the first ever female officer in LEPrecon, and loves nothing more than flying above ground. She is heavily involved in the Artemis Fowl affair, and although she won't admit it, she has bonded with Artemis Fowl II and his manservant Domovoi Butler.

Lieutenant Briar Cudgeon was a former friend turned arch-enemy of Julius Root. He tried to make himself look good in order to become part of the fairy Council, a very prestigious and powerful political group which runs the Lower Elements. He assumed the rank of Commander during the Artemis Fowl crisis (Book One), only to have it usurped by Root when his plans were unsuccessful. He is at the root of the majority of the events of The Arctic Incident, along with his partner in crime, Opal Koboi. Cudgeon dies at the end of the Arctic Incident after being vaporized by plasma.

Commander Julius Root is the head of LEPrecon. He was the youngest ever commander for the LEP, and has led the People through many a crisis. He also set the land speed record for flying. He hates to be called by his first name by his officers, and when he gets angry his face turns varying shades of red, hence the nickname "Beetroot". However, although he is quite irritable and has a rather sarcastic sense of humour, he makes a good leader.

Turnball Root is Julius Root's infamous older brother. In The Artemis Fowl Files, he is shown as a criminal and former captain of LEPrecon. He attempted to flood a part of Haven City to kill a competitor and escaped (disgraced) that time from the grips of his brother. He attempts to ambush Julius during Holly Short's initiation and force him into a human dwelling to take away his magical powers, but is outwitted and arrested.

Private Chix Verbil is an almost flirtatious sprite who first appears operating the troll-cage in Artemis Fowl. He is winged with green skin, and loves to fly. In Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident, he is hit in the wing by B'wa Kell sniper fire from a softnose laser. Although Holly Short healed this life-threatening wound, the injury has prevented Chix from ever flying again.

Foaly the centaur is the technical wizard of the LEP. He is very intelligent, and enjoys nothing more than winding up Commander Root with his sarcastic comments and complicated lectures. He designs equipment for the LEP, and is constantly competing against his arch-rival, Opal Koboi.

Major Evergreen is an officer kidnapped by Turnball Root and tortured into telling the location of Holly Short's initiation. Turnball gives him an illegal amnesiac, causing him to forget all about the ordeal.

Captain Vein is mentioned a one of the top LEPrecon officers in Book 1.
