[edit] Watford City

Hey there! I see that you and User:MatthewUND have done some work on the Watford City, North Dakota article and several related to it. As a Watford City native, I say thanks! I'd only suggest one thing, which is to find a way to explain that the Oilers are not (or at least to my knowledge still are not, unless things have changed recently) part of the school but rather a private undertaking outside of the school. Other than that, great work. I wish I had the time to devote to my home state's storied history, but fortunately others are hard at work. Thanks again! Ari 06:01, 2 February 2007 (UTC), a North Dakotan in Virginia for now

I'll assume you have the right Dennis Johnson and go with 'yes.' Small world? Ari 23:11, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
So you know who I am, evidently. Who are you? :P Ari 06:49, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Problems with vandals

It can be pretty frustrating having to deal with vandals. I have a couple thousand articles on my watch list so I revert many acts of vandalism every day. When you notice someone causing vandalism, go to their talk page and add one of the warning templates found at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. If you notice a persistent vandal, don't hesitate to leave a message at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Persistent vandals can be blocked for periods of time or indefinitly. --MatthewUND(talk) 20:54, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] North Dakota State Bison wrestling

Thank you for your work and creation of the North Dakota State Bison wrestling article. I noticed you hadn't been working on it lately and then realized I had eliminated your "head coach table" when I didn't really mean to. It's a nice table and connects the article to the other NDSU sports articles. I'd removed it once when I incorporated the info into the article and then did it again when it wasn't formatted right and I wasn't sure how to fix it. I didn't mean to keep removing your work and I don't want you to feel unwelcome editing since you do such a nice job on NDSU and North Dakota articles. Feel welcome to do any editing you'd like. The article could use your help. Johnn 7 16:26, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading images

I know that uploading images can be very confusing. If you find it too daunting, don't hesitate to simply ask me to do it for you. I'm very willing to help out if you can just point me to an image's location on the web.

Remember, there are really very few images that can be legally uploaded to Wikipedia. The only images that you would really want to be uploading are either images you've created yourself or images that fall into a few narrow categories of acceptable images for Wikipedia articles (including logos and works of the US Federal Government).

To upload, simply click on "Upload file" in the toolbox on the left side of the screen. From there, you need to specify the "Source filename" and the "Destination filename". The image you want to upload should already be saved on your computer. Click on "Browse" and select the image on your computer that you want to upload. Then, come up with a "Destination filename". If it confuses you too much, you can simply skip over the "Summary" section for now. The last thing you have to do is select an appropriate "License". For the sports team logo you mentioned, you would want to scroll down and select "Logo" as the license. Then, just click "Upload file" and wait for a while (generally a few seconds to a minute) for the uploading to complete.

I hope this helps. I know this is a confusing process! --MatthewUND(talk) 07:28, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Senior Senator

Hey. I do not know you, but i see you are a member of North Dakota Wikiproject. Please, could you answer my question. I would like to point out that in 1992, Kent Conrad retired, and Byron Dorgan won. Dorgan is still in the Senate. And then Conrad ran and won a few years later. Wouldn't this make Dorgan senior senator from North Dakota??

Thanks,

Politics rule 23:03, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

P.S.- I also support the Republican Party!=)

  • Thank you for responding to my question. I sent a lot of people this question, and not many redsponed. Thanks again! =)

-Assessments-
An intial round of assessments was recently done on all pages within the scope of WPND. These initial assessments...all 1,200+ of them...were done by MatthewUND. Matthew tried to generally follow the assessment guidelines found at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment.

To see the assessment of any North Dakota page, simply go to the page's talk page and check the WPND banner. The assessment is presented in a color-coded field in the WPND banner. To change an assessment, edit the page and change the word after "class=" in the WPND banner. Add one of the following codes:

Stub - for very small articles
Start - for slightly longer, higher quality articles
B - for high quality articles of an appropriate length
List - for lists
Cat - for categories
Template - for templates
NA - for pages that are not articles, templates, or categories

Any WPND member should feel free to change any page's assessment. However, keep in mind that there are assessments (particularly GA for "Good Article" or FA for "Featured Article") which can't be applied without having gone through a nomination process.

[edit] North Dakota American League Baseball

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on North Dakota American League Baseball, by MatthewUND, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because North Dakota American League Baseball fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

page that was incorrectly titled and has now been blanked

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting North Dakota American League Baseball, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate North Dakota American League Baseball itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 07:20, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] North Dakota State Bison men's basketball

I didn't make the move Leopold, but it sounds like a sensible move to me. All NDSU and UND athletic team articles should probably be split into two gender specific articles. --MatthewUND(talk) 20:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

The women's material was moved to the logical location, North Dakota State Bison women's basketball. Even if the material hadn't been moved into its own article by someone else, you could have looked at a previous version of the generic NDSU basketball article and found the women's material yourself. --MatthewUND(talk) 22:35, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

---North Dakota Portal---
Wikipedia now has a new portal devoted exclusively to the state of North Dakota. Check out Portal:North Dakota.

WPND member NDCompuGeek has constructed the initial framework for the portal and it should now be easy to update the portal on a month-by-month basis. The portal will serve as a kind of "front door" for people using Wikipedia to learn more about North Dakota. It is a great starting point for branching out into the many aspects of the state.

Each month a different article, picture, city, and biography will be showcased along with current news and happenings from around the state. The July version of the portal showcases the Mandan tribe, Governor John Hoeven, and the capital city of Bismarck.

Visit the portal's talk page to share your opinions and ideas regarding the portal.

[edit] North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives

Hi, looks like you posted a cut-and-paste at this article. I tagged it for speedy deletion as a copyvio, but feel free to rewrite / repost it in your own words. Thanks! -- But|seriously|folks  18:38, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Here also. -- But|seriously|folks  18:44, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
If what you're saying is you cut-and-paste, save, then rewrite in your own words, please don't do that. That results in a copyright violation in the page's history, which is still a copyright violation. Please either use preview only until the copyvio has been removed or compose in notepad.exe and move to WP when it's no longer a copyvio. Better still, write the article from scratch in your own words, so it won't end up as a paraphrase of someone else's work, as that might still be a copyvio. Thanks! -- But|seriously|folks  18:48, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

News
---Grand Forks now a Featured Article---
Grand Forks, North Dakota was recently designated as a Featured Article. This means that the article has gone through a nomination process in which it was reviewed and its quality was assessed. The fact that this article made it through the process shows that it is a high quality, well-written, well-sourced article. Currently, there are only a little over 1,500 Featured Articles in the almost two million articles on the English language Wikipedia. That means that only about one in 1,270 articles has been given this designation.

The Grand Forks article is a great example to follow when working on other city articles, particularly those about North Dakota cities. We would be very well off if our other major city articles were similar to the Grand Forks article. Keep the Grand Forks article bookmarked and refer to its structure and style when you work on similar articles.

---New assessment parameter---
You're likely aware that all WPND articles now include a quality rating located on the article's talk page. Now, a new assessment parameter is being implemented. The importance rating aims to gauge the "importance" of the article's subject as it relates to North Dakota. As an example, Bismarck, North Dakota would not be considered as being very important in relation to the country or the world, but it is of top importance when considering just the state of North Dakota.

The importance of each article is gauged as either Top, High, Mid, or Low. Since "importance" is a rather subjective term, some WPND members are trying to come up with a general set of guidelines. Check out this thread on the WPND talk page to see proposals and to share your own opinions of what is and isn't "important" in the state.

Please help to improve and expand these articles which were recently added to the WPND project:
Cities Area Transit | Dakota Territory Air Museum | Fight On Sioux | Fort Totten State Historic Site | Grand Forks Chiefs | It's For You, North Dakota U | List of people from Grand Forks, North Dakota | Log Cabin Museum, Sheyenne, ND | McKenzie Electric Cooperative | North Dakota Democratic-Independent Party | North Dakota Railroad Commission | North Dakota State Cabinet | Old Main (Minot State University-Bottineau) | Pembina State Museum | Politics of North Dakota | Ruth Meiers Hospitality House | Spirit Lake Casino | Stand Up and Cheer (song) | Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation | UND Alma Mater

[edit] Archive?

You don't have to, but I would suggest you archive some of your talk page. It is currently quite long and a little hard to navigate. If you need any help archiving it, don't hesitate to ask me. Also, it looks like all of the ND American Legion baseball articles have been speedily deleted. --MatthewUND(talk) 22:12, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I archived all comments from 2006 and put them into User talk:Leopold Samsonite/Archive1. A link to this archive also appears at the top of this talk page. I hope you don't think it too bossy of me to suggest archiving these messages. I just think it makes this page a lot easier to navigate and shows only the more timely messages. See you around! --MatthewUND(talk) 01:41, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edits

Hi, there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot 02:26, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

---North Dakota articles on Main Page---
This past month, two new North Dakota-related articles appeared in the Main Page's "Did you know?" section. The articles were Zip to Zap and Climate of North Dakota. Congratulations to the creators of these articles — it's always exciting to see North Dakota articles on Wikipedia's Main Page. A request has also recently been made to make Grand Forks, North Dakota a Featured Article of the day.

---Active members and inactive members---
In an effort to more accurately gauge just how large WPND is, the WPND members list has been split into an active and inactive list. If you have not made an edit to a North Dakota-related page within the last three months, you are moved to the inactive list and do not receive the WPND newsletter. If you disagree with moving members to an inactive list, please share your thoughts at the WPND talk page.

---New administrator---
WPND member MatthewUND (talk · contribs) was recently promoted to Administrator status. That means that he has been granted the use of special tools so he can take care of housekeeping tasks such as blocking disruptive users, protecting pages, deleting pages, and quickly reverting edits to pages. It has been mentioned in the past that WPND was in need of an administrator. With MatthewUND's promotion, that is now a reality. Please contact MatthewUND if you are ever in need of an administrator's help.

[edit] Article ownership

Good question, Leopold. Actually, no one really owns any of the textual content on Wikipedia. Check out Wikipedia:Copyrights. Text on Wikipedia falls under the GNU Free Documentation License. That articles states that: "[the license] gives readers the same rights to copy, redistribute and modify a work and requires all copies and derivatives to be available under the same license. Copies may also be sold commercially, but if produced in larger quantities (greater than 100) then the original document or source code must be made available to the work's recipient." In other words, when you add text to a Wikipedia article, it is basically being released in such a way that anybody can use it for any purpose they so desire. So...when you enter text on Wikipedia, you don't really own it. --MatthewUND(talk) 22:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

No, your contributions could not be removed simply because you no longer wish to contribute to Wikipedia. Building Wikipedia is about creating a free encylopedia for the world; it would be entirely against Wikipedia's nature to delete material simply because it had been contributed by someone who had decided to leave the project. --MatthewUND(talk) 22:55, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

News
---Article deletions---
A series of deletions of North Dakota articles this past month is a good reminder that we need to be careful when creating new articles. Before creating any article, it is a good idea to 1) check out Wikipedia:Notability to see if the subject deserves an article and 2) make sure that worthwhile sources can be found pertaining to the subject and are effectively used to cite the article. Often, instead of simply creating a brand new stub article for a subject, it is a good idea to expand an existing article that in some way can address the subject.

---Peer reviews---
The University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University articles are currently up for peer review. Please take a moment to visit UND's peer review and NDSU's peer review. Read through the articles and then share your opinions of where the articles currently stand and how they might be improved. Peer review is often a step in the process of getting articles to Good Article or Featured Article status. As a WikiProject, we are very much in need of more GA or FA class articles.

Housekeeping
---Mandan demoted---
After a review, the Mandan tribe article is no longer considered Featured Article class. This is a reminder that even after articles have made it all the way to FA class, it is always possible for them to lose that designation. This also means that WPND is down to one FA class article.

---UND article upgraded---
The University of North Dakota article was recently upgraded to "good article" status. This brings WPND up to two good articles and one featured article. We should work on bringing other North Dakota articles up to a higher status. Look in Category:Top-importance North Dakota articles for articles to work on improving. It would be great to get the main North Dakota article to GA or FA class in the near future. There are also a number of other articles which are close to GA status already...a little work will make them ready for that designation.

---Assessing article importance---
Work continues on assessing the "importance" of all articles that fall under the banner of WPND. Currently, around a third of all articles have been rated for importance.

---A new "Good Article"---
WPND now has another new good article: 1997 Red River Flood in the United States. This article was recently split off from the 1997 Red River Flood article. Much of the credit for this article's promotion should go to Nehrams2020 (talk · contribs).

---Let's improve our main article---
For a WikiProject whose focus is the state of North Dakota, there is likely no article that should be more important to us than the North Dakota article itself. We should work on improving this article to at the very least good article status and ideally featured article status.

---UND on the Main Page?---
The University of North Dakota article is currently listed as a good article. Given UND's 125th anniversary ([1]), perhaps we should think about improving this article to featured status so it could potentially be the article of the day in February when the event is officially observed.

[edit] North Dakota State Treasurers Category

I am writing to let you know about a "Categories for Discussion" vote that I initiated with respect to Category:North Dakota State Treasurers. I have proposed that the category should be renamed to Category:State treasurers of North Dakota in order to conform with the standard used in all other similarly-named categories. For examples of what I am talking about, see Category:State treasurers of the United States. The reason I contacted you about this matter is because you have previously edited an article within the aforementioned category. --TommyBoy (talk) 18:32, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
