If I remember correctly, it can be derived from at least one of the DW books that Leonard's imprisonment is voluntarily. I think it is mentioned that he designed the traps leading to his accommodation himself (could be in 'Jingo').

Yes, at the end of Jingo he wanders quietly back to his cell, avoiding the traps absently, and reflecting how lucky he is that he's generally protected from all the madmen in the outside world. Daibhid C 14:54, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
