Re this claim:
- Leona is the German variant of the French name Léon, both meaning 'like a lioness'.[1]
This is wrong in several ways.
- The source doesn't state that "Leona" is derived from the French version. It could be derived from any number of other sources, e.g. directly from the Latin.
- The source doesn't state that "Léon" means "like a lionness". It doesn't. It simply means "lion". In fact, "Leona" doesn't mean "like a lionness" either, it has no lexical meaning in any of the languages in question, over and above referring to the name "Leon".
- The source does state that "Leona" is German (well, "English and German", to be exact.) I question the correctness of this claim, as the source is not a reliable source. In my experience, this name is not common in German. Show me a few German persons who have this name and I'll reconsider.
