Leonatos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Captain Leonatos is a character from the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe. He is the hero of the Bloodquest series of graphic novels (Rennie and MacNeil, 1998), in which he and a group of followers travel into the Eye of Terror to retrieve a lost Blood Angels artifact, the Blade Encarmine. The popularity of the character led to a special model of him being commissioned, although this is extremely rare as only 1,000 copies were ever made.

[edit] Beginning of the Bloodquest

Leonatos was a hero of the Blood Angels, but after losing an artifact, the Blade Encarmine, in battle against the Orks, he was exiled from the chapter. Leonatos' search for the artifact is known as the Bloodquest.

[edit] His followers

  • Brother Cloten - a mighty warrior but touched by the Red Thirst
  • Scout Novice Proteus - the most distinguished of his company he stowed away with the exiles in order to achieve glory for himself
  • Scout Novice Lysander - while his fellow scout novices swore themselves to Leonatos and his quest, Lysander remained quiet and while a loyal companion and fierce fighter, his reasons for joining the Blood Quest remain known only by himself
  • Brother Palamon - fought with Leonatos in the Orkish defeat which lead to the loss of the Blade Encarmine
  • Veteran Sergeant Tranio - fought with Leonatos in the Orkish defeat and was overwhelmed when the Blade was lost, his shame at this led him to be the first to pledge himself to Leonatos' Bloodquest

While searching for the Blade Encarmine, Leonatos loses some of his followers along the way:

  • Menelius on the planet of Tarsis.
  • Furion on Tarsis, while fighting a Daemon of Khorne.
  • Valerius on a space hulk while he was holding the doorway so that his brothers could escape.

[edit] The Quest

Leonatos and his followers crash-land on the planet of Eidolon, a daemon world within the Eye of Terror. Here, they find out from a Dark Angel renegade that the Blade Encarmine is on Eidolon, but is on the other side of the world. They must pass through four continents, each of which is ruled by one of the Chaos gods:

  • The first area, the Sea of Blood, is ruled by a Daemon Prince of the Blood God, Khorne. Fleets of warships constantly struggle for supremacy, and those who lose plunge to their deaths at the hands of the monsters that dwell beneath the surface. Here, in a duel with the Daemon Prince of Khorne, Palamon is wounded and Tranio gives his life defeating him.
  • The Plague City of Ebolis is ruled by the daemon lord of Nurgle. The outskirts of the city's walls are littered with rotting carcasses and the creatures that feed on them, while inside the city's deserted streets, great towers pump toxic gas into the air, and the buildings' inhabitants have been reduced to mutated, crawling freaks. Here, Palamon's wound has become infected and he eventually becomes a host for the Daemon Prince of Nurgle.
  • The chosen champion of Slaanesh lives within Vada, the City of Temptation. Vada is filled with merchants and slave dealers offering forbidden pleasures in many decadent forms. The Daemon ruler of the area lives in a great palace, and is always surrounded by what she refers to as her "playthings". Here, Proteus is tempted with visions of what seemed like a better future for him than that offered by the Blood Angels and he swears allegiance to the Daemon Princess of Slaanesh.
  • The most powerful being on Eidolon, a Daemon of Tzeentch, lives within the fourth area. The surface of his part of the planet is covered in a never-ending maze which the Blood Angels must make their way though, although the paths that they take whilst inside it will affect their futures and eventual fates.

[edit] End of the Blood Quest

The champion of Tzeentch is weary and wants to move on from Eidolon, and he sees Leonatos as the ideal person to take his place. However, Leonatos has other plans though and to kill the Daemon, the Blade Encarmine had to be used, but Leonatos threw it to his men and stayed behind to cover them ensuring their quest was completed.

However Cloten and Lysander refuse to leave Leonatos to damnation on Eidolon, and return to search for him in the third part of the trilogy. During the third enstallment of the trilogy, Cloten and Lysander discover that Leonatos has been possessed by the same daemon who once possessed Garshul the Destroyer (ork warlord at the beginning of the trilogy)and is now a warmaster of chaos. Cloten and Lysander are captured by Leonatos. At the end of the third book Leonatos gains control of his body and mind for a slight moment and redirects the chaos fleet into an ambush. Leonatos and Cloten die with the Chaos fleet and Lysander returns to the chapter.

[edit] Bloodquest goes on

Several years ago, Games Workshop had announced in a press release that Exile Studios will be working on a CGI movie based upon the Bloodquest graphic novel. A trailer had been released, but the project was later put on "indefinite hold". With Exile Studios having disbanded, the fate of this project remains unknown.

[edit] Leonatos within the game

Such was the popularity of the Bloodquest story, a series of limited edition figures were produced by Black Library.[1][2] The Leonatos figure came with a numbered certificate, and a sheet with an in-game statline which allowed the character to be used in games of Warhammer 40,000.

[edit] Publication

The comics were published in shorter editions and then collected in one larger volume:
