Leon Wurmser

Dr Leon Wurmser is an internationally-known psychoanalyst, now Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at West Virginia University and a training and supervising analyst of the New York Freudian Society. He was formerly Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program at University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Wurmser has authored 43 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 6 books, and numerous book chapters and essays. His works deal with topics surrounding addictions and drug use, some translated into other languages. They include the often-cited The Mask Of Shame, published in the early 1970s and reprinted into the 1990s. His focus on addictions continued through to 2005's Flight from Conscience: Psychodynamic Treatment of Character Perversion, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Addiction. His writing has also looked at topics such as narcissism and other issues.

Wurmser has also been the recipient of several awards in his career. In 2004, he was awarded the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association Journal Prize [1] for a paper titled "Psychoanalytic Reflections on 9/11, Terrorism and Genocidal Prejudice: Roots and Sequels." [2]
