Leo Phocas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo Phocas was a 10th century Byzantine general. In 917 he was in command of a 110,000 Byzantine army which was to destroy Bulgaria but on 20 August his troops were thoroughly annihilated at Anchialus. Phocas barely escaped by sea and hastily summoned another army to stop the Bulgarian advance to the south but his last troops were defeated again at Katasyrtai.
