[edit] Who were they and why were they famous?

Like the Vanderbilt family between 1870 and 1930, and the Hilton family since about 1920, the Lennox family were extremely famous and wealthy in the late 18th Century. Their reputations were enhanced by their affairs, their unorthodox ideas and lifestyles, and their famous families.

Perhaps one of the main reasons that their story is so enthralling today is because it is set in the palaces of kings, in London drawing-rooms, and in great stately homes in England and Ireland.

[edit] Ancestry

They were the daughters of the Second Duke of Richmond and of Sarah, a daughter of William Cadogan, the army general. Their ancestors included an illegitimate son of Charles II.

[edit] Lady Georgiana Caroline Lennox (1723-1774)

Lady Caroline Lennox was born on 27th March 1723. In 1744, at the age of 21, she ran to marry politician Henry Fox. In 1751, she was overlooked in her father's will. In 1762, she was raised to the peerage as Baroness Holland of Holland in the County of Lincolnshire. Her husband became Baron Holland of Foxley in the County of Wiltshire the next year. Her sons, who were both spoiled and dissipated, caused her great grief over their gambling, and this may have contributed to her death. She died in 1774, a short while after Henry Fox.

[edit] Family

Married in 1744 to Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland of Foxley in the County of Wiltshire, a Whig politician. He was the brother of Stephen, first Earl of Ilchester. His father was politician Sir Stephen Fox.
