Lempo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lempo is a sort of fiend from Finnish folklore and mythology, who appears in the Kalevala. Lempo is a demon, as are Hiisi and Piru.

According to Mythologia Fennica by Christfrid Ganander, Lempo the evil fiend was also the ancient Finnish god of wilderness and archery.[citation needed] Others have interpreted Lempo as a being of precarious love, a sort of Cupid.

The words "lempo" and "hiisi" are also used as very mild swear words in the Finnish language. "Piru" is a slightly stronger swear word.
