Lemon Bay High School (LBHS) is an American public high school located in Englewood, Florida. It serves grades 9 through 12 and is operated by Charlotte County Public Schools.

[edit] History and campus
Lemon Bay opened its doors in 1972 as an elementary school in Englewood, Florida. In 1976 LBHS became a high school with grades 7 through 12. In 1983, simultaneously with the construction of L.A. Ainger Middle School, grade 7 was relocated with grade 8 being altered out the following year.
A major renovation completed in 1987 gave the school a new administration wing along with a community swimming pool being added in 1989. Four years later an auditorium and new media center was added. For home sporting events Lemon Bay has a track, football field, baseball field, softball field, tennis courts, weightlifting room, swimming pool, and gymnasium.

The standard english, mathematics, science and history courses are core requirements for all students. These four subjects can be taken as Advanced Placement or honors level courses. Many electives are also available, including television production, drafting, journalism, French language, Spanish language, and physical education courses.

[edit] Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC)
The NJROTC is a program set up by the United States Navy. Students in NJROTC wear a modified U.S. Navy uniform once a week and must pass a physical education test once every nine weeks as part of the curriculum. Student leaders are in direct control of the affairs of the unit, and are supervised by two retired United States Navy instructors.

The Model United Nations club on campus has achieved success in competitions taking place around the state, including at the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, and the Florida High School Model United Nations(FHSMUN). The school was also a founding member of the competition held at Florida Gulf Coast University, the Southwest Florida Model United Nations Competition.

The theater program puts on several productions during the school year, along with one during the summer in which elementary and junior high students participate. In the past, the theater program has put on productions such as The Music Man, Anything Goes, Seussical the Musical, Les Miserables, Swing!, Oklahoma!, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cats (musical) and Grease (musical). The thespian troupe at the school has also achieved success with district and state level performances.
The band is made up of Marching band (fall semester), Symphonic band, percussion ensemble, and jazz band. The Marching Mantas participated in performance at the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida in January of 2007 along with several other high school marching bands.

Fall season sports at LBHS include Junior Varsity and Varsity Football, Boy's and Girl's Golf, Volleyball, Swimming, Diving, Cheerleading, and Cross Country. During the winter season, students can participate in Boy's and Girl's Basketball, Girl's Weightlifting, Soccer and Wrestling. During the spring season, students can participate in Boy's and Girl's Tennis, Competitive Cheerleading, Track, Boy's Weightlifting, and Softball. Lemon Bay High School is known around Southwest Florida for its wrestling team. Which won the state championship twice in the 1990s. Recently they have been known for the state runner-up title in girl's volleyball where they lost to Jensen Beach High School from the east coast of Florida. Notable Athletes
The most recognized athletes to come out of Lemon Bay High School were George Nichol, Philip Maio, Shawn Calahan, Dwaine Barclay, Jesse Lantz, Doug Weinberger, Denis Weinberger, Ralph White, Dan Wear, Sean Huber, Steve Smith, Keith Oil, Scott Huber, Casey Minot, Will Burke, Devon Lyons, Derek Zimmerman, Rob Curry, Casey Carroll, Zack Kirkpatrick, Dave Hutcherson, Jeremy Cunningham and Brian Almeida. Most notable win for the Manta Rays, came in September of 1992. The Mantas defeated heavily favored Cypress Lake High School in overtime. Senior quarterback Steve Smith pitched the football on an option play, around the left side to #32 Dwaine Barclay, when the junior speedster outran the Cypress Lake defense for the go ahead touchdown. This touchdown set off a massive celebration among players and fans alike. This was the first district win in Lemon Bay High School history. The 1992 Mantas were coached by Giove Picci between 1989 to 1993. The current head coach is Mike Messina.
