[edit] Backpacking

Hey Leif,

I recently read the comment you left at my homepage regarding the new backpacking project. I'm not exactly a backpacker, but I do dayhike as much as I can, and I am avid about nature photography and field/emergency preparation. I will try to recruit new members for the project. Also, I just wanted to ask if you (we) could develop a comprehensive homemade backpacking/hiking kit, including materials and packing methods that we would normally find available at home. LifeScience 15:03, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Great to hear you've joined the project! I'm glad to have you along, though wikipedia dosn't allow "origonal research" you may like editing the Ten Essentials article which really requires cleanup... Also, if you'd like, I have a publication I work on (not wikipedia realted) entitled, "The Beginners Guide to Backpacking" which can be found on my webpage http://hikes.greenmangames.vze.com that you may be interested in submitting an article for (if you're into that kind of free collaboration). I look forward to working with you! - Leif902 18:37, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

P.S. If you want to write one, a packing methods article may be good, REI has some good info on weight distribution in internal/external frame packs

[edit] Backpacking project

Thanks for your comments on my talk page. I have just added the Project tag to all appropriate entries in Category:Hiking and bushwalking tracks in Australia and will try later to add them to the other categories in Category:Hiking and tramping tracks in Oceania. I hope this tagging will attract other Australians to join the Project. In doing so I came across Yuelarbah Track which is just one sentence and should be merged into Great North Walk. I have tagged the articles for the merge.

Let me tell you something of my involvement in this area. I was born and brought up in England and fell walking in the Lake District, Peak District, Yorkshire dales and other places was part of my life. I still do some walks when I go back there. I moved to Australia 20 years ago and lived in Darwin in the far tropical north. I did not fancy the walks there, although my son in Scouts became an expert. I moved to Melbourne only 2 years ago. There are many fine walk here, but I have done virtually nothing as old age is creeping up and my wife is not a walker. Thus I know far more about walks in the UK than I do I about walks in Australia. Let me know if you think I can help about any details for these two countries. I will try to help as I can but I am heavily involved in other projects and one recent one on Melanesia needs support badly. --Bduke 23:52, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks alot for your help, I don't know much about hikes in the UK or austrailia, except the Lake district, I've fell walked all over there... beautifull up there. Anyways, thanks for your support! -Leif902 00:42, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ten Essentials

Hey,

I fixed it up quite a bit, but I know the grammer and content still needs cleaning. But nonetheless it is much better! LifeScience 01:33, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Alright, thanks again you guys for helping to kick start this project! (Now if we can only get some editors who know something about wikiprojects as I know nothing about the design or maitenance or management of something like this). Leif902 01:49, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

I have signed in as participant, is it possible to put down my personel experiences regarding backpacking? My village is in moutanious area of NWFP, Pakistan, (which was severly jaulted by the oct 2005 earthquake) where I have spent some remarkable days of my life with a bag on my back and had tried to help effected people on the peaks of Mountains and plain valleys aswell, with the help of NGOs, Country people and local tribesmen. I will not be able to forget those 40 days of backpacking. Regards. Haider 21:30, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Glad to have you aboard! Sure, we'd love to know about your experience, while there really isn't room on the project page, feel free to add something to your user page so that other users can draw from your experiences! Thanks again, -Leif902 22:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WPBP invite

Hello Leif902. Thank you for the invitation. I appreciate it, but won't join at this time. I'm a little behind on my Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon tasks as it is. Though, I will continue to patrol a few key backpacking articles and maybe make a contribution or two. Thanks. —EncMstr 22:23, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

That's quite alright, thank you for your response, and happy editing! - Leif902 22:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hey Leif902,

It's been such a long time. Sorry, but I've been busy because of classes (UC). Ill be on break soon, and start a hiking vacation! I would appreciate it if you could suggest any articles that require lots of cleanup; the backpacking homepage "Task" area is a little slow on its updates. LifeScience 13:50, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Nah, don't mention it, I've been away for quite some time too as a matter of fact, schools getting to me... but I'll see if I can put in a couple of updates, I really did want this project to get off the ground, and then shortly after it's creation I felt like I just kind of abandoned it what with me not ever being able to work on it. -Leif902 13:15, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hiking the Smokies

Leif902,

I apologize if I am not submiting properly. This is a first.

But I have a question pertaining to the Wiki backpacking project. I have written several articles on certain trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They are on my website here: http://www.pigeon-forge-gatlinburg-family-git2know.com/Hiking.html

My question is what would be the best and appropriate way for me to contribute info for wikireaders concerning backpacking these trails? Is there an appropiate place to post a link?

I am not fluid or familar with the process of contribution to Wiki, let alone a Wiki project. I just thought that some of the hiking pages that I have already built on my website would be of value to wikireaders looking for hiking info about the Great Smoky Mountain area. Thank you Barry Meadows Git2know 21:37, 21 June 2007 (UTC) kai1zen@yahoo.com

Hi, that would be great! On the relavent pages (perhapse on specific trails or ranges) you can put your links in the further reading sections at the bottom of the page, or create one if one does not exist. Hope that answers your question! Glad to have you abord!

[edit] Hi, question about adding info about an outdoor company

Hi, I'm the E-Commerce Manager for Adventure 16, a backpacking retailer in SoCal- I notice there was an article about A16 but it was deleted for being too promotional- REI has an entry, so I thought we should- we've been instrumental in the development of the sport in America... the first backpack that put weight on the hips instead of shoulders was invented here, for example, and there's plenty of press coverage historically I can look for as references.

I've been reading up on Wikipedia rules- I was wondering if you had some tips for moving from our 'about us' type of material to an encyclopedic entry? How can I help get a good wikipedia entry for my company in?

I hope that by being upfront that A16 is my employer this will assure you that my motive is not to deceive or avoid any of Wikipedia's rules.

Thanks! Brian Carter

P.S. can you reply to bcarter at adventure16 dot com? Thanks! -B

Mr. Carter,
I'm glad to see that you have interest in writing an A16 article for the English Wikipedia. Unfortunately I'm not sure that I am the person best suited to help you being very inactive on Wikipedia myself. I have done very little for the wiki and know much more about backpacking than encyclopedia articles or Wikipedia. I do, however, agree that A16 needs its own article. There are many articles on Wikipedia written to help people write their first articles in an unbiased way and I will list several of them below. Also, you might try WikiProject Backpacking ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Backpacking) which is a - slightly lousy - attempt by myself to rectify the fact that Wikipedia has so little quality backpacking material.
Regards,
Leif902

[edit] Wikimania in Atlanta!

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 09:38, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Qr.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Qr.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 22:00, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Ah these bots, I was in the process of adding the rational when it added this. It is done. -Leif902 22:02, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
