[edit] Why this page should not be deleted
I created a stub page for Leila Khatami, but within minutes the page was marked for speedy deletion, then deleted outright. I can identify several reasons that a page for her is appropriate:
1) She is part of a "first family" of Iran. Mohammad Khatami was the president of Iran for 8 years. Many children of United States presidents have their own Wikipedia pages. There are a few references to her in Western media archives, undoubtedly many more in Iranian media.
2) She is one of a handful of mathematicians who are famous for non-mathematical reasons or connections. She is linked on the page Famous people trained in mathematics (list), so that is a reason to have at least a short page on her.
3) There is a particular interest in biographies of women in mathematics. Leila Khatami is not particularly visible in this realm, but she may be in the future because her career is good.

To follow up, some comments on the criteria that apply from Wikipedia:Notability (people). The main one is "demonstrable wide name recognition", which is surely true in Iran. There is also some merit in the direction of "the person has received significant recognized awards or honors", although I admit that it doesn't make the case by itself, since Khatami is at the moment visiting Harvard. Note also for comparison that there is a page for Zoia Ceausescu. Greg Kuperberg 16:36, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
- Greg, if you want the article based on mathematics, you need to show her notable in mathematics -- your have here listed in the section on "people with independent, serious research work in mathematics. " For comparison, "Zoia Ceauşescu published 22 papers between 1976 and 1988." (Though only one is listed from a major journal.)
- If you want her LK as the daughter of Mohammad Khatami, then we really need some references to her in that role, which shouldn't be difficult. I'm changing the page to "proposed deletion" to give some time, & I will keep track of it. DGG 18:05, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
I put some work into the page. Since it has been deleted twice after about an hour of existence, I am pasting in a copy of what I wrote this evening. Greg Kuperberg 04:00, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] May 21 version of page
Leila Khatami (born 1975) is a daughter of former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami, and a research mathematician working in commutative algebra. She obtained her PhD in 2003 at the University of Tehran from Siamak Yassemi. She has also been mentioned occasionally in the Western media in reference to her father's personal situation [1].
