To the south of the 12th century Great hall is the motte.

This large mound was part of the original 11th century Norman motte and bailey castle which was located by the River Soar in the south western corner of the town's Roman defences. This unsigned comment was added by User:Parsival74 - talk at 05:08, 19 November 2007.
