Leighton Bromswold
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leighton Bromswold is a village in the English county of Cambridgeshire situated on a hill to the north of the A14 road.
There are a number of theories about the village's name but the most likely is that "Leighton" is a Saxon term meaning a clearing in the woods. The "Bromswold" was added to distinguish this village from the other Leighton in the Diocese of Lincoln in the 12th century; the other Leighton became Leighton Buzzard.
The poet George Herbert became lay prebend of Leighton Ecclesia in 1626, when the church of St Mary 'was so decayed, so little and so useless that the parishoners could not meet to perform their duty to God in public prayer and praises'. Herbert restored and re-ordered the cruciform church.
