Leica M8 with Upgrade Program

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The new introduced Leica M8 in the rangefinder M series of Leica Camera AG is the first digital camera that incorporates with the perpetual upgrade program. The camera is equipped with Leica M lenses, which has a 6-bit coding optical scanning device. Leica M8 uses a low noise Kodak KAF-10500 CCD image sensor, which has a resolution of 10.3 megapixels with dimensions of 18mm*27mm. The camera enables two picture-taking modes of single frame taking and continues shooting with 2 pictures per second and 10 pictures in series. The new M8 has a scratch resistant sapphire LCD cover which can only be scratched by diamonds. Every M8 is equipped with a SD memory card with storage capability up to 4 GB.

The perpetual upgrade program was announced on January 31st 2008. Instead of launching new series such as M9 or M10, Leica offers upgrading to M8 itself. Leica claims that, under the program, existing owners of M8 will get the latest refinements and development of their cameras. For upgrading, Leica would pick up the camera from owner’s home and deliver it back directly after upgrade. The first booking will be possible as of March 2008. The fist upgrades will probably be possible around August 2008.
