[edit] Papals?
Just out of interest, can no one find out if it's leagle in the Vatican City? I'm not sure how they work out there, but they may not have actuly made a law againsed it, I mean, who goes to the Vatican to smoke dope? heh, although they do have the worlds highest crime rate in the world...84.67.174.157 12:46, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Contradictions
A contradiction tag was posted but there was no explanation so I removed it --voodoom 07:03, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- I came on here to mention that. The reason seems to be that some information on the map contradicts some information in the article. I have put the tag back up. Thomasiscool 20:05, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- I put the contradiction tag back. The image seems to contradicts large portions of the text below it. For example: Ghana and Tanzania are legal (according to the text), but the map shows otherwise. Check the table and you will find many conytradictions. Which is true, I do not know. But can someone who has the knowledge please sort it out? Врунн@р 19:53, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

- the map in this list is used in various articles related to cannabis on wikipedia, however i am unsure of it's accuracy, it is more importatnt that this page focus on the authenticity of the list information rather than the map which contradicts several pages in reference to world legal status --voodoom 10:59, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
There is a complete contradiction under Vietnam. Apparently cannabis is illegal there. But tolerated. But penalties are harsh if caught. The last two can't both be correct. My guess is that the penalties are harsh if caught. Can anyone clarify? raining girl 23:03, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

- It's that the local authorities know about it but don't generally worry too much, but if you do end up getting convicted for it, you're in deep shit ;-) --Nad 04:32, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] More detail needed
The article could do with more details about the whys and wherefores of cannabis legalization in various countries.
For example, the map shows cannabis as being decriminalized in Iran, but I somehow doubt that the authorities would look upon you kindly if you just turned up at Tehran airport with a few kilos of the stuff in your suitcase. 217.155.20.163 10:10, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Legal penalties in Thailand, Saudi Arabia, etc
I do not think that the penalty for cannabis USE or even mere POSESSION (small amounts) in any country is punishable by death. In Saudi Arabia, for example, it is somewhere between 20-100 lashes with a whip. In Thailand I believe it is a fine and imprisonment. Smuggling/trafficking/selling cannabis may or may not be punishable by death, (heroin and cocaine smuggling certainly is - in both countries - however, that is a different topic) but I doubt that it is. 68.252.4.244 17:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
In Thailand, it is technically illegal to all kinds of possession. Smuggling/trafficking/selling are punishable to death. Using is illegal, but de facto, the addicts are not punished but are considered as patients and must get treatment program. 125.25.76.142 (talk) 15:31, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Please note that in Thailand, the maximum penalty is execution by injection. Unlike Saudi Arabia that still behead drug sellers. And also noted that, there haven't been any execution in Thailand since 2003. A few years ago, there were 3 Thai men beheaded in Saudi Arabia because of cannabis trafficking.125.25.76.142 (talk) 15:44, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Spain
Why does the image say "legal" and the text says "illegal"? 212.35.119.66 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 09:49, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Legal/Basically Legal status in Ontario
I don't know who made this, or when, but it's outdated. Our Federal government recriminalized marijuana early 2006, as part of a new drug-fighting policy. I don't need to cite a damned thing, as well; I live in Ontario, and have been charged for posession of 1.4 grams, post amendment. To keep Wikipedia correct, this mistake HAS to be fixed. Otherwise, the lot of us Wikipedians are a bunch of hypocrites. 74.12.4.49 22:56, 26 October 2007 (UTC) Joe Caron. (P.S.: If you think I'm wrong about this, get researching.
[edit] Citation
Citations are badly needed for the information that is offered on this page, if you don't know how to cite please post websites, articles, official laws and policy on this talk page so that we can at least begin to put together accurate information --voodoom 10:09, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I like how Taiwan and Republic of China (Taiwan) give different summaries. Citation needed indeed! Just more proof wikipedia is a joke, worthy of vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.170.84.2 (talk) 12:43, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Map
Map and list below contradict each other several times. For example, in the map it is said that cannabis in Italy is decriminalized, but in the list it's written "illegal". Many other countries suffer this contradiction. --Gspinoza (talk) 16:40, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Map Has been removed due to inaccuracies, however if someone would be willing to make a new map based off of the information contained on this page it would be welcome --voodoom (talk) 01:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Estonia
Death? Really? I cannot find any claim to back this up.--Superj711 (talk) 09:00, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- No, that's completely impossible. One of the requisites for a State to be in the European Union is the ban of death penalties; and Estonia IS in the European Union. --Gspinoza (talk) 13:51, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Nepal and India?
I recall reading a magazine about 25 years ago (High Times I think it was) that authoritatively stated that there were only two places in the entire world where it was legal at that time: Nepal, and Uttar Pradesh state, India. It said that it was illegal everywhere else on the planet. If that is correct, the situation seems to have changed considerably since then, as it is now listed as 'technically illegal' in both of these places. Can anyone verify this or shed any light? Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 14:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- (Answering myself) OK, I looked into this and found that apparently the Indian gov't outlawed it everywhere in 1964, Nepal's (after some resistance) in 1976, so it looks like the information I read in an old stoner mag (in fact, it was in the editors' response to a letter IIRC) was bogus or badly outdated.
- Maybe we can also use somewhere, this interesting quote I stumbled upon: The present drug control strategy of India can be traced back to the [UN] Single Convention on Narcotics Drugs of 1961. This was enforced in December 1964 and amended in 1972. The developing countries became puppets in the hands of U.S., via the UN. Increasingly we witnessed the incursion of international drug legislation into the national scene as aid became conditional on countries accepting the U.S. inspired drug laws. This threat was posed (among others) to Nepal when it refused to implement national drug laws modelled on international requirements.[1] Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 14:55, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Argentina and other innacuracies?
I found the following on stopthedrugwar.com:
"WOL: What is current Argentine drug policy? Is it based on the prohibitionist model, as here in the United States?
Inchaurraga: Yes, Argentina has been following the North American "war on drugs" model. And as in North America, it has failed here, too. Drug use is on the increase, along with its associated problems. In Argentina, even the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use is punished. Coerced, abstinence-based treatment is a sad lie. Our official policy has not changed under a number of governments, and we have had decades of prohibition, with the war against drugs and the war against drug users. Our officials and policy-makers and our drug agency, SEDRONAR, frequently argue that "we cannot modify international agreements," but that too is a lie. There are other Latin American countries, such as Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay, that do not punish possession of drugs for personal use. We must make people here understand that drugs should not be a criminal justice issue. "
This would seem to be in complete contradiction with what is posted in this article. If you search the site using other countries, you will find other examples of inconsistencies. As well, I think using erowid as a "source" is somewhat dangerous, as that site is predominantly anecdotal in nature.
