The first Belgian legions were formed in 1792 by volunteers resulting from the Austrian Netherlands that had come to put themselves at the service of the young French Republic. General Lahur made her first weapons there.

[edit] Beginnings
Temporarily restored in Belgium, Austria made its constitute on March 4, 1814 of the military units with regional recruitment, the Belgian legion.

It includes four regiments of infantry (of Brabant, of Flanders, of Hainaut and Namur) and three regiments of cavalry, and is passed as of August 1814 in the army of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to which the territories are attached, forming current Belgium. In 1848, Belgian Republicans in Paris formed a Belgian legion consisting of certain members of the French government, that were dreaming of annexation, invading their country and reversing the monarchy there. Confrontation with the Belgian troops took place; they were judged, condemned to death, and were carried out in Antwerp.
