[edit] No merger please! whilst we are discussing the fricking thing
There is a discussion about merger going on. Please do not merge the page before that discussion is over.
See also Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Subdivisions
Since User:Tverbeek jumped the gun, I have removed the merger notice, lest anyone else decides to take matters into their own hands. 15th Oct 2004 --Tagishsimon
[edit] No merger please!
Instead it would be better to rename followin User:Tagishsimons scheme. (See discussion on Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Subdivisions)
- Leeds becomes Leeds (city)
- City of Leeds becomes City of Leeds (district)
- Leeds (district) redirects to City of Leeds (district)
Each article should cross-refer to the other in the first paragraph.
This article discusses Leeds, the city, in West Yorkshire, England. For the administrative district, including the surrounding towns and countryside, see City of Leeds (district)
This article discusses the City of Leeds, the administrative district, in West Yorkshire, England. For the city from which it takes its name, see Leeds (city).
City of Leeds (district) should also be expanded to include a short list of the areas included in it, and links to the relevant pages.
The same applies to Bradford.
- Steady on, old chap. I;d keep Leeds at Leeds. It is only trhe City of Leeds that I'd amend :) --Tagishsimon
[edit] Industry and Economy
Hope noone objects, but have changed reference from "Leeds International Airport" to "Leeds Bradford International Airport" as no airport exists called "Leeds International Airport". This now links correctly to the article on the airport.
Also changed Leeds Robin Hood Airport. The airport I assume this refers to is not in Leeds not anywhere near Leeds. It is infact Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (www.robinhoodairport.com) and I have amended the name to reflect this. Although I do question the impact this will have upon Leeds Bradford Airport alluded to in the article. The main international airport in the region is in fact Manchester International Airport and is used by far more "loiners" than either LBA or Robin Hood. I don't have any figures - it's purely anecdotal - so if anyone fancies looking into it and possibly changing the section, please go ahead.
[edit] A hint of the Leeds/Manchester rivalry in the text?
"much of the importance taken from nearby Manchester which is now a much smaller and less important town."
[edit] Leeds Born?
I may be wrong, but it's my understanding that both Beryl Burton and Ernie Wise were from the pre-1973 Borough of Morley, not Leeds. (taking into account the original author's definition of 'Leeds').
Can someone advise me if we need to redress two pieces of misinformation?
Alan Titchmarsh was born and raised in Ilkley so I removed him for the list.
If Morley isn't in Leeds equally Pudsey etc. aren't. This makes no sense!
Pudsey has a Leeds postcode, if that qualifies it....
[edit] Leeds - featured article on the Swedish wikipedia!
Have we spoted that Leeds is a featured article on (I think) the Swedish wikipedia. There sems to be stuff on their article which could be uplifted onto ours with minimal pain. If I were not (meant to be) working right now... --Tagishsimon (talk)
[edit] Schools
I have cut the self aggrandising section of Royds school.
[edit] Capital of the North?
The citation given for saying that Leeds is known as the "Capital of the North" was a rather spurious article on the BBC website about Leeds's astrological chart! I have now changed this, and have also qualified the statement slightly as there are other places that could conceivably claim the title, Manchester being the obvious one. MFlet1 (talk) 11:25, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well there isn't really a capital of the North, but Leeds is far bigger than Manchester anyway. Only people from Manchester call it the capital of the North. Technically, if it means the north of "England", then Liverpool is biggest. - Yorkshirian (talk) 01:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Nearby places
I've deleted this section, because it doesn't make sense to list these while not listing the places which are within the City of Leeds but not in Leeds (eg Otley). We already have thelink to "City of Leeds", the location grid, and the West Yorkshire template, and I think these are enough. PamD (talk) 07:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Third largest city
I have removed the addition of this to the lead
the third largest city in the United Kingdom by population
with a reference of http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/uk_topcities.html
the figures in the reference refers to the wider City of Leeds area and not just to the city as this article is directed at. Keith D (talk) 12:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- The figures under demography and religion also refer to the City of Leeds, as opposed to the urban core area which is the subject of this article. These too should be (re)moved. Chrisieboy (talk) 14:26, 10 June 2008 (UTC) Done Chrisieboy (talk) 09:29, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Replacement of the Town Hall photograph?
Hi folks. I took a four image 'panorama style' shot of Leeds Town Hall. Could this be good enough to the replace the current town hall image? ~Xytram~ (talk) 19:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Coat of arms
Just a note that the Council coat of arms recently added do not pertain to Leeds, but the City of Leeds council - i.e. the metropolitan borough. This article should not display them - Otley and Micklefield have just as much claim to displaying them (the 1974 arms were mostly illstrated to represent the "whole" borough - not the centre). Please be mindful of that distinction.
It has been mentioned (in an edit summary) that Manchester displays its arms - that's because it's a metropolitan borough (like the City of Leeds). A fair use rationale here, doesn't cover its usage. --Jza84 | Talk 11:07, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
