[edit] Discussion medium
While IRC seems like the best approach, a few people have expressed concerns that it will be technically difficult or require special software. I thought that I might set up a web interface so that people can just open up a browser window and chat away; I have one such already, it would be easy to add this channel to it or create another entirely separate one. For now I will assume the channel is called #en-wikipedia-lectures on freenode (i.e., [1]), but of course this is easy to change. --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 08:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- You are fantastic. Thank you so much! --Kim Bruning (talk) 20:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I set it up at http://greyfire.org/wiki-irc Just pick a nickname and away you go! --tiny plastic Grey Knight ⊖ 15:04, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- For consistency, shouldn't the channel be named #wikipedia-en-lectures? All the channels were renamed this way some time ago. Greeves (talk • contribs) 17:15, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sunday April 6, XX:XX UTC
Is my proposed first lecture date.
I've also submitted a CFP proposal to do a lecture at wikimania.
Comments? --Kim Bruning (talk) 22:39, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm going for Sunday April 6, 15:00 UTC, since that covers a large part of the globe that will be awake at that time. Any Ozzies or Kiwis have a problem with that time? Anyone else want it to be earlier or later? --Kim Bruning (talk) 18:29, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
I suppose we're going to have to do some spamming :-( --Kim Bruning (talk) 12:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Like, go around to everyone's talk page? Xavexgoem (talk) 21:19, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- And, uhh, April Fools' to anyone who came here because they saw the edit summary. Xavexgoem (talk) 21:30, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Skype
To use Skype, download it from this website. If you want to talk, it is best to use a headset; otherwise you can just listen over speakers. if you want to record anything on Skype, I would suggest installing Pamela, which is found under the Tools menu of Skype. User: Private musings uses Sound Forge which has the website to convert mp3 files that have been recorded by pamela to ogg files.
Once you have Skype, pick a user name. Tell Kim Bruning what it is so he can add you to a text chat on Skype and then we can set up voice from those in the chat. --Filll (talk) 23:32, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for a great lecture yesterday.. I look forward to many more. Hopefully, in time, this will become as good and as established as Wikipedia Weekly. The idea of having Signpost have a section on scheduled talks or released radio programs was an excellent idea, and I hope it takes off. I'm taking a break from editing for the next few months, due to personal and work reasons, but hopefully, I'll be back after that.
- One request... could we continue to have the lectures on skype, but have the chat on IRC if possible. That way, everyone will be able to join in, and those not on the skype, but who come to the IRC channel can see that the lecture is going on and join in... Thanks. Cheers. [edit] Presentation
Just a suggestion, but to engage the attention of those browsing, it might be a good idea to name the various lectures and give a brief summation of topics covered. The headings, for example, could be altered from "Lecture X: Now complete" to "Lecture X: Mediation cabal, coverage of science on Wikipedia, and WP:Silence". The page as it is currently presented does not really draw the reader in. Best, Skomorokh 13:05, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- I took a whack at this. It would be cool if those more familiar with the previous topics might be able to expand their descriptions a bit. I figure each one should have a few sentences generally to give a decent description. Cheers! Vassyana (talk) 14:00, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Proposal
I propose that we do not use Skype anymore. I for one will not be. Its been discussed here specifically and I tend to agree. I'm not just being overly paranoid here. SynergeticMaggot (talk) 02:21, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- <scratches head> You could create a separate skype account? Skype is actually a tad more secure than irc. I actually used it to make life harder on a secret service once (no idea if it worked, I was just being paranoid :-P ) I'm kind of amazed that there's actually some kind of instructions on-wiki for that now. It used to be that everyone knew how to make virtual personas , it seems to me. Ah the good old days ^^;; --Kim Bruning (talk) 12:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

- *sigh*... if you're that paranoid, you don't have to actually speak on voice. ^^;; --Kim Bruning (talk) 12:41, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
