[edit] My RfA

Thank you so much for voting in my recent RFA. It passed on the relatively narrow vote of 38/8/8. It was also one of the least-participated-in RFA nominations in several months, so pat yourself on the back, and join the party on your left, but first, take your cookie!

NOTE: I can't code HTML to save my life. I copied this from Misza13. I guess I should write him a thank you note as well. Cookies sold separately. Batteries not included. [edit] Bot activity at the reference desk

Thanks for adding the dates at the language reference desk. There used to a bot to do that, as well as archive old discussions there, but it got permablocked because its human overseer left the project. User:Angr 11:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Pretty much. Either that or not bothering. Or programming a bot to take over where the other one left off, but I don't know it. User:Angr 12:13, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please support

Hi. I'm wondering if you could lend support to a proposal for a Stub-sorting Barnstar. The page is here. Have a good day :) SynergeticMaggot 17:34, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, please excuse the wording. I do not mean to ask for a vote, just that you participate. SynergeticMaggot 18:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
No worries. There was a bit of a scare because the first proposal did not make it. And it seemed no one was finding the proposal page, then it was moved, then passed. I was merely supporting another member of the project's work by informing members. Thanks though! SynergeticMaggot 05:32, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Autoblocks and such

Here's my understanding: An autoblock occurs when user A (with a username) is blocked, and user B tries to edit, where B is using an IP that A recently used. Autoblocks are separate events, and if you can find the autoblock, you can undo it. IP blocks are different; if a user A (with a username) is blocked, then A's IP is also blocked, but no autoblock is actually logged. There's a new feature that lets you block anonymous editing only; I think how that works is that if you select it when blocking an IP, that IP is the only thing blocked, and no autoblocks are generated. This may work when you block a user with a username too (ie, blocking A this way will block the IP but not B). However, there's no way I know of to block a username and NOT block the corresponding IP, except to wait and hope the blocked user doesn't keep using that IP. While I agree it is possibly a biography, the article clearly makes a claim of notability of being involved as a defence lawyer in at least two famous court cases. Hi, I noticed that you deleted a page I created, Freaklüb, on 1st August. I'm not sure the reason why. I don't recall there being any discussion about it's deletion. Please can you explain a) why it was deleted and b) why there was no discussion prior to it's deletion. Even if there was a good reason, some notification or debate about it might have been helpful. --duncan 08:27, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Perhaps you can help

You've assisted me with a couple of situations in the past, most notably a vandal who reported to personal attacks on the John Wayne page several months ago. I would ask that you look at the edits of User:Editingreader. User has made only 3 edits to Wikipedia, all to my userpage and all vandalism. Most notably this edit [1] in which he tagged my page to the WP:CFD under the reason "This user page sucksalot, and so does Batman2005." This is obviously a vandalism only account. If you could either...block the user, or direct me to some page where I might be able to get something done about this, it would be most appreciated. Batman2005 01:48, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Many thanks for your offer

Many thanks for your offer of help - I'm trying to improve my schoolboy german by doing quite a bit of translation, but I do often get stuck and have to mull it over for a while before I can get at the meaning. I could use a little help at the moment if you wouldn't mind:-

as

While about 1500 of the 4000 Swedish churches originate from the Middle Ages, only a few secular buildings are well preserved (or survive); the Burgher's houses in Stockholm and Visby, the rest being fortresses and castles.

I'm worried about this one because I'm not sure the meaning is even correct - It might be saying something like there's 4000 buildings from the middle ages in sweden, 1500 of which are churches, there's the burgher's houses in stockholm and sweden and the rest are fortresses or castles.

I'd be really grateful for your help. Kind regards --Mcginnly | Natter 17:19, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Back with another one:-

Zu dieser Zeit entstanden die großartigen Wasaburgen, die an strategisch wichtigen Plätzen zur Beherrschung des Landes errichtet wurden, gleichzeitig aber auch den herumziehenden Hof beherbergen sollten.

This was the age of the great Wasa castles; erected at strategic locations to control the kingdom, at this time the court stopped relocating.

Not sure about the last phrase - why was the court relocating/moving about (maybe it was and was peculiarity of the swedish crown at the time due to military pressures - but it needs an accurate translation) Thanks. --Mcginnly | Natter 17:49, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks ever so much for your help Architecture of Sweden is now translated - I'm currently copyediting it and there's a lead to write, but it's taken the english stub into a half decent length article overnight. Regarding Jasper Fforde the simple answer is that he's english (From Gloucestershire) and his name is pronounced in english like the car "Ford".

Ff in Welsh is pronounced as an elongated F. To give you an example of the sound take the word "fiz" and continue the f sound for a bit longer than you would normally eg. "fffffiz".

I remember from school being taught about an englishman called Fred Francis who moved to Wales, learned welsh and then changed his name to Ffred Ffrancis! What the origin of his name is I can only speculate:- Ffordd is welsh for road however but the E on the end of the name makes it look french to me (Maybe Breton might be an educated guess) alternatively it might be a name from which the modern day "Ford" has come eg, an olde spelling that hasn't been changed over the centuries. Who knows - I'm sure a Geneology website will let you know. Thanks again. --Mcginnly | Natter 12:33, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Translation request

I was wondering if I might be able to bother you again with a translation request - I'm translating de:Palais Strousberg. In the Edgeschoss paragraph it says:-

"Oberhalb der kleinen, niedrigen Fenster der Wirtschaftsräume im Kellergeschoss verbanden große, über drei Meter hohe Fenster im Vorzimmer des großen Festsaales, im großen Festsaal und in der Gemäldegalerie die Gesellschaftsräume optisch mit den Gartenanlagen im großen Hof, dessen Fassaden korinthische Säulen unter einem Architrav gliederten"

I'm struggling with Wirtschaftsräume - could this be an Accounts room or is it just the servant's work rooms?
I'm guessing it translated as something like "Above the small, low windows of the accounts room in the basement, large windows (over 3 metres high) optically connected the anteroom of the great festival room, the picture gallery, the festival room and lounges, with the plants and garden in the courtyard. The facade to this courtyard was arranged with corinthian columns united under an architrave. Schöned dank. --Mcginnly | Natter 23:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
