From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lecuona Cuban Boys was a popular Cuban music band during the 30's and 40's. The band was founded by Ernesto Lecuona, one of the most successful Cuban composers of all times. Their style is rumba.

The two front figures of this eleven-piece band were Ernesto Lecuona and Armando Oréfiche (highly appraised Cuban composer, pianist). Other band members were trumpeter/guitarist/composer/arr. Ernesto 'Jaruco' Vazquez, tenor saxist/bongosero Adalberto 'Chiquito' Oréfiche. Vocalists were Gerardo Bruguera and Alberto Rabagliatti, among others.

When first founded, the band was called "ErPalau Brothers Cuban Orchestra".

The band successfully toured in USA in 30's, and then went to tour Europe for a longer while, playing at some of the most exclusive bars and casinos. When World War II broke out, the band went to Latin America and continued their touring there.

In 1934, Ernesto Lecuona got ill and went back to Cuba. After this Armando Oréfiche took charge of the band in Europe. After a leadership hassle, Armando Oréfiche split with his brother, and started up "Havana Cuban Boys". The Lecuona Cuban Boys based in NYC from '46–60 and continued to tour until the mid-'70s.
