This is a 1943 photo from the Caltrans site, showing the Ridge Alternate down Grapevine grade. It is looking north at the curve to the left after the Fort Tejon exit; this can be confirmed by comparing the mountain in the background with about 1/5 through this Caltrans photolog file (thus about postmile 6 in Kern County).

[edit] Fair use for Ridge Route
Though this image may be subject to copyright, I (NE2) feel its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:
- It is a photo that the California Department of Transportation has provided for free on their website.
- The photo is being used to show the difference between the old two-lane Ridge Route and the four-lane Ridge Alternate. None of the old Ridge Alternate survives in this state, since most of it was incorporated into the eight-lane Interstate 5.
