Talk:Leamside Line

Interested to know more about the potential of opening a station at Ferryhill, and added some references. Progress with this seems to have stalled. Does anyone know better?
- It was part of a proposal by Railtrack to re-open the route, with the potential for a local passenger service, but nothing came of it following the collapse of Railtrack and the cutting of government grants. As part of its bid to take over the GNER franchise, Virgin Trains also proposed to re-open the track as overspill for the ECML, but this would not have involved a local service. When GNER retained the franchise, this also came to nothing.
A very short section of the line from Pelaw Junction remains in operation today, serving the open-cast coal mine at Wardley.
- Does anyone know if this is still the case? It looks very overgrown to me.
"Around one mile of track to the south of Penshaw was 'stolen' in 2003[1] and will have to be replaced if the line is finally reopened. This theft, estimated to have cost more than £1 million, is thought to have taken place late at night over many months, with the track and sleepers sold for scrap."
The BBC article related to the text above says that the estimated value was £250,000.
