KIPP: Lead College Prep Charter School is a one-year charter school serving in Gary, Indiana, serving students in fifth grade in its initial 2005-06 school year, and then adding one grade each year until it serves fifth through eighth grades.[1] The school is part of a network of charter schools in Indiana (and in Gary) sponsored by Ball State University, the 18th in the state it has sponsored, and the fourth in Gary scheduled to open in 2006[1]. The school operates under legislation enacted in 2001 by the Indiana General Assembly allowing universities to sponsor charter schools.[2]

The school opened with an initial class of 81 students in fifth grade. Classes started in mid-July, 2006, part of the school's longer school year.[3]

KIPP LEAD (Leaders with Empathy, Achievement and Dedication) is part of KIPP: the Knowledge Is Power Program, a nationwide network of nearly fifty independent charter schools in under-resourced communities. KIPP's approach aims at closing the achievement gap through hard work, a longer school day (7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays)[4] and a college preparatory focus. In addition to the longer school day, KIPP LEAD students are in school for three weeks during the summer and for four hours on alternating Saturdays, offering students at KIPP: Lead College Prep Charter School 60% more in-school learning than students in typical public schools.[5] Students are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct, or socioeconomic background.
