Le nabab (The Nabob) is an opéra comique by Fromental Halévy to a libretto by Eugène Scribe.
The opera, which was premiered in Paris on 1 September 1853, is the last collaboration of Scribe and Halévy, which had commenced with what proved to be Halévy's greatest success, La Juive (1835).
The work which is in three acts, begins in India where the Commissioner, Lord Evendale, contemplates suicide from boredom with his life and his wife. His doctor counsels taking a year's sabbatical. Before setting off Evendale pays for the passage to England of the orphan Dora.
In England Evendale works in disguise for the uncle of Dora, and wins her heart. Fortunately in the third act Lady Evendale is revealed as a bigamist, (having married Evendale's doctor in their youth), freeing Evendale to marry Dora.
The opera had 38 performances and appears not to have been revived.
