Le déserteur

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Le déserteur (The Deserter) is a comédie mêlée d'ariettes, a kind of opéra comique, by the French composer Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny with a libretto by Michel-Jean Sedaine. It was first staged at the Comédie-Italienne, Paris on 6 March 1769.

The work was Monsigny's greatest musical success and is one of the key operas of late 18th century French opéra comique. The serious main plot concerns a soldier, Alexis, who is condemned to death for desertion, but the opera also includes many comic elements.
