[edit] Battle of Xuan Loc and aftermath
By April 1975, North Vietnamese forces were in full advance and most ARVN resistance has collapsed. Le Minh Dao's 18th Division, however, made a defiant last stand at the Battle of Xuan Loc, 38 miles from Saigon. The fierce fighting raged for two weeks. The 18th Division, outnumbered seven to one by PAVN forces, was overwhelmed by superior numbers on April 21, 1975. Saigon fell nine days later. Le Minh Dao was captured at the end of the battle and spent 17 years in a re-education camp. After his release, Le Minh Dao received political asylum in the United States.
