LB&SCR L class

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The LB&SCR L Class was a class of 4-6-4 steam tank locomotives designed by L. B. Billinton for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. They were known as the "Brighton Baltics", Baltic being the European name for the 4-6-4 wheel arrangement.

Seven were built between 1914 and 1922 and they were used for express passenger services. Their LBSC numbers were 327-333. Three of them were named:

  • No. 327 Charles G Macrae
  • No. 329 Stephenson
  • No. 333 Remembrance

Southern Railway numbers were 2327-2333.

All were converted to N15X Class tender locomotives between 1934 and 1936.

Locomotives 2329 and 2333 retained their names in their new form, the rest received the names: 2327 Trevithick, 2331 Beattie, 2332 Stroudley.

Spare parts left over were used to make the LSWR Class N15 tender locomotives[citation needed].
