Lawrence Herchmer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lawrence William Herchmer (25 April 184017 February 1915) served as the fifth Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, from April 1, 1886 to July 31, 1900. Although Herchmer gained a reputation as a tyrant during his tenure as commissioner, the RCMP under his command became better organized, trained, and respected, with a marked improvement in esprit du corps. Herchmer introduced the wide-brimmed hats to the uniform and the famous musical ride.
