Lawrence Herchmer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lawrence William Herchmer (25 April 1840 – 17 February 1915) served as the fifth Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, from April 1, 1886 to July 31, 1900. Although Herchmer gained a reputation as a tyrant during his tenure as commissioner, the RCMP under his command became better organized, trained, and respected, with a marked improvement in esprit du corps. Herchmer introduced the wide-brimmed hats to the uniform and the famous musical ride.
