[edit] Translation questionable
I would question the derivation: lauter meaning clear or bright. I am familiar with 'Lauter' being used in just two senses: 1) louder, and 2) as in 'Lauterkeit', meaning honest. --Philopedia 13:59, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

The writer is not correct. While "lauter" means louder in High German, In Swiss German this would be " luter ". In my opinion Lauterbrunnen means Clean Well; Brunnen meaning Well or Fountain. ( compare with "Lauterbach" < clean creek )
[edit] Jungfrau?
Is there any reason why the Jungfrau is not mentioned on this page?

Yes, kind Sir or Madam: because then we would have to mention Eiger, and all the other mountains. So unless you would like to list every mountain in the Swiss Alps, you may just have to live with the possibility that names are really not such a big deal. Additionally, once we have named every notable mountain in the Swiss Alps, you can be sure people would start wanting the names of all mountains in neighboring France, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. Not to mention then everybody would start to want to know the names of all the mountains in the world. And that would, of course, leave out named and unnamed mountains on Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (no longer a planet - just a chunk of dirty ice left over at the end of snowplowing in Massachusetts) and the Sun. You say: no mountains to name on the Sun? Think again, pal, there are lots of them - they just don't last as long as the ones here on this little rock. And wait just a minute what about all the mountains on all the other planets (with no alien life, presumably) that have yet to be named? Good luck with that I hope that answers your question adequately. If not, please write me at sgsullivan@hotmail.com and I will give you some more reasons.
