[edit] Todd's debt to Laura

There are better lyrics to quote from Todd Rundgren's 'Baby's Let's Swing':

Laura, I saw you open in LA / There's something I gotta say / Laura, you know it's really been such a long, long time / And you know Laura, I knew you'd make it good someday / And you knew it anyway...

...Laura, I saw you in that magazine / You looked like a gypsy queen...

[edit] NPOV?

I'm as big a Laura Nyro fan as anyone but this article seems to violate the NPOV rules with phrases like "She possessed a beautiful, angelic voice" and "Nyro was also blessed" both of which are not only not neutral but presuppose the existence of a deity and angels. If there is no reasonable objection, I'd like to replace these and others similar remarks with something a bit more in keeping with NPOV. SuperDuperMan 00:06, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Very true comments. The substance of the current text was inserted by User:65.106.144.66 on 15 February 2006 - it needs a thorough rewrite in NPOV language. I would offer, but having just tackled Dion I think I need a break ... Ghmyrtle 22:28, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
    • OK, I've had a quick go. Still needs improvement, and I'd be happy if some references to her quality as a singer and writer could be put back in. Ghmyrtle 22:59, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • I thought it was just me. This article sounds very unencyclopedic. It's from a fan's POV and not a NPOV.--angrykeyboarder (a/k/a:Scott) 21:17, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
    • OK, it still needs work. I'm going to be away for a week or two - if no-one else has addressed the POV issues before then I'll try to give some time to it when I get back.Ghmyrtle 21:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pronunciation

How is her surname pronounced - [náirou]? --1523 10:37, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Her name is pronounced: NEAR-oh. As in the guy who fiddled while Rome burned.

[edit] List of hits

They should add a list of her hit songs performed by other artists. I don't think she had any real hits on her own as a performer. Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues (5th Dimension); Stoney End, Flim Flam Man (Barbra Streisand); Eli's Coming (Three Dog Night). Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I'd do it myself, but don't really know the whole Wiki syntax, etc.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:F26038w9hct.jpg

Image:F26038w9hct.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:22, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

the intro sentence here is totally messed up. 67.172.48.126 05:23, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Desiree"

User:Ralph, Let's call her Ralph has persistently tried to insert the following (or similar) text :- Her treatment of the song "Desiree", a cover which she adapted and re-titled, is considered by Ari Fox Lauren, the foremost authority on the music of Laura Nyro, to be an open expression of same-sex attraction on Laura's part. It is a noteworthy coincidence that the name Desiree and the last name of Laura's eventual life partner, Maria Desiderio, both mean desire. This has now been reverted several times asPOV and unverified. Firstly, the coincidence is irrelevant (she recorded the song before meeting Desiderio). Secondly, the view that the song is "an open expression of same-sex interest" is just that, a view, unverified. The comment COULD (though I'm not really recommending it) be modified further to make it more tentative, but I really don't think there's any merit in a specific reference to Ari Fox Lauren - who may or may not be an "authority" on Nyro. In my view, the paragraph is better without any reference to the interpretation of "Desiree", but if anyone can come up with a better compromise wording than the one I suggested earlier, please do so. Ghmyrtle 21:48, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

That part of the text is now (as of today, 17 July 07) pretty much OK. I've just added an article on The Charts, which incidentally points out that the spelling "Desiree" (rather than "Deserie") was first used by The Charts themselves in a 1967 re-recording (rather than first being used by Nyro in 1971).
