A native of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Coleman began her professional career as a ballet dancer and performed with the Minnesota Dance Theater. She also danced with the Boston Ballet as well as the City Ballet and Harkness Repertory Theater companies in New York.

In fall of 2004, she was featured in a photo spread for the Washington Post in which she appeared in boudoir-type photographs. In the interview for the photo-shoot, she said that she enjoys modeling, long walks on the beach, and quiet dinners in her home.
According to her husband's Personal Financial Disclosure (a document that U.S. Senators and candidates must fill out annually to disclose their financial interests), Laurie Coleman worked for Holster, Inc., a merchandising-supply company, in Los Angeles and Susan Bristol, Inc. in New York City in 2004 (see [1]).
