Laura Mercier Cosmetics was founded by Janet Gurwitch and Gary Kusin in 1996, and was named after French make-up artist Laura Mercier, who was already known for her work in Hollywood and New York City.

Laura Mercier Cosmetics are manufactured by Gurwitch Products, LLC, a company that is itself majority-owned by Neiman Marcus. Annual sales approach $120 million. Janet Gurwitch remains CEO of the company; co-founder Gary Kusin has moved on to become CEO of Kinko's.
