[edit] 1998
The band's debut on the show, on October 27, 1998, was actually an hour-long R.E.M. special, entitled Later... presents R.E.M., during which they showcased six songs from their then-brand-new album, Up (indeed, the album was released in the US on the day of the recording). The band deemed their performance of a high enough quality that six songs from the fourteen-strong set were released as B-sides on Up's three singles. (The performance of "Perfect Circle", the only song not included in the aired programme, was a B-side on the 3" CD version of the "Suspicion" single.)
The performance, recorded at BBC Television Centre in London on a stage designed to resemble the artwork of Up, was the first opportunity that JHE Audio had to use their new FIVE monitor. R.E.M.'s monitor engineer, Don Gerber, was reportedly impressed with the new product, which followed the band through the previous night's live broadcast on BBC Radio One, the Jools Holland performance, a recording for satellite channel EPK, Top of the Pops, and TFI Friday.
R.E.M. were augmented by multi-instrumentalists Scott McCaughey (who toured with the band in 1995), Ken Stringfellow, drummer Joey Waronker, and lap- and pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole (who sat in on 'Daysleeper', 'Country Feedback', 'Man on the Moon', and the closing Iggy Pop cover, 'The Passenger'). The host also joined the band for the finalé.
The performance of "Country Feedback" was included on the 10 Years Later... 30 Great Performances DVD, released in 2002.
The show aired on BBC Two on November 6, 1998.

[edit] Quotes
“Well, Prince wrote the first song about the so-called millennium, so I wanted to jump the gun before everyone else kind of hopped onto it." - Stipe, introducing "Electrolite".
“May I have another glass of this incredibly-delicious apple juice, someone? [Looks around] Anyone? I’ll settle for some cheap champagne... or maybe not.” - Stipe.
[To the floor manager] "She needs to go for a pee. Is that what you said? [Looks around again] I don’t know where the bathroom is, I’m sorry. Can’t help you there." - Stipe, prior to "At My Most Beautiful". He went over to the woman during the "Country Feedback" intro and apologised for embarrassing her.
[With glass of apple juice in hand] “The magic of television! [Sips it] Gorgeous stuff." - Stipe, after "At My Most Beautiful".
[Snorting] “And now we’ll play... my favourite song... off the new record. This is called...[laughs]. [Speaking normally] This is all the rage in Los Angeles, I’m sorry to tell you. [Snorts once more] ‘Walk Unfraid'.” - Stipe.
“Now, periodically throughout this song I’d like everyone in the audience to scream the word, uh....” “No...” interrupted Mills. “Why not?" asked Stipe. "It's stupid," replied Mills. "I know it’s stupid, but then they won’t broadcast it! Alright, you’re right. [To the audience] Just scream whatever you want.” “What do you want, Mick?” asked a member of the audience. “What do I want? You really don’t wanna know, buddy.” - prior to "The Passenger".
[edit] 2001
On May 1, 2001, R.E.M. made their return to the show, alongside Orbital (who supported R.E.M. during their tour for Up two years earlier), fellow Georgia artist India.Arie, Baaba Maal, Clearlake (making their television debut), and Ron Sexsmith. Brian Eno was amongst the guests interviewed. R.E.M. were promoting their then-current album, Reveal, from which three of the four songs came. For old times' sake, they performed out "The One I Love" to bring the show to a close.
Stipe was interviewed by Holland in-between R.E.M.'s performances of "All the Way to Reno (You're Gonna Be a Star)" and "The Lifting".
BJ Cole aside, the auxiliary musicians remained the same as three years earlier.
The show aired on May 10, 2001. Like their first appearance on the show, their section of the studio was designed to resemble the artwork of their current album.

Buck, Mills, and Stipe were interviewed between "Losing My Religion" and "Nightswimming".
