[edit] Merge

Agree with merging all. Rlevse 15:00, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Disagree, if we keep the actual articles about the knots short and sweet, it would be much better organizationally. --Captain538 01:46, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Short and sweet == target for merge and deletionists. Not to mention the article is not fully developed. Rlevse 16:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Agree on merging. One article would be easier to develop encylopedicly, right now it isn't. The more indepth articles are, the better. Radagast83 02:42, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Agree on merging some. The Square lashing and Diagonal lashing articles are comparatively far along and efforts might be better spent improving them rather than merging. However those other three are definitely not up to any reasonble standard... Eventually, though, most of these lashings should have seperate articles as they are quite distinct in form and usage. --Dfred 05:02, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Agree, if we merge them they will be easyer to find, and shouldent be difficult to navigate if a table of contents is added Chuck61007 03:13, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Merge, as per my first thought many months ago only with a different conclusion (see strikeouts below). — Athænara 10:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Don't Merge

My first thought was, of course, merge them, but after viewing each of the articles about the distinct types of lashing knots I no longer think so. It would be best to keep the specific lashing knots pages distinct from the main Lashing knot page with links there to each and all of them. The articles are shaping up well for young entries (and will no doubt improve) and the inclusion of photographs for each distinct lashing knot is extremely useful. Athaenara 23:14, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

As long as the articles keep improving, I would vote no to the merger. Dddstone 19:55, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I do not think merging is a neccessary as this article already decribes lashings and provids links--BKnoss 01:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

What buildins are constructed with lashing? Were is lashing routinly used in constuction. I read that in some Asian countries it is used to make bamboo scaffolding on skyskrapers.

My point is that the structures section needs work, as well as more history on the use of rope in construction.--BKnoss 01:48, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Lashing *Knot*"?

I ended up here by a circuitous route after failing to find an article called Lashing. Now, I come from the sailing rather than scouting side of things these days (though I was once a cub and briefly a scout) but I've never heard a lashing referred to as a "lashing knot". A lashing is a lashing; a "lashing knot" if it's anything at all is a knot used to make fast the end(s) of the line.

Any comments? PeteVerdon 23:31, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps this was intended something more along the lines of "Lashing (knot)", as that suffix has been used on a number of articles to associate them with the knotting rather than some other usage. However, that convention has problems since the non-parenthetical "knot" ends so many articles it becomes confusing. I've proposed on WP:KNOTS that "(knot component)" be used as an article suffix for the parts of a knot (loop, bight, etc.). Your comments here cause me to think that "(ropework)" would also be a good standard suffix for knot/rope-related articles which are not specific knots.
I propose renaming this article "Lashing (ropework)". Whipping knot would also be a good candidate for a similar action. And there are probably others. --Dfred (talk) 15:16, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
I'd support that. Let's give it a few days for comment, then if there are no objections, make the move. PeteVerdon 23:36, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Inconsistencies between text and pictures"

In the introduction it says " then start do a timber hitch". In the description of square lashing it says "begin with a clove hitch ". The picture next to square lashing seems to clearly show a timber hitch.
