The LaserWriter 12/640 PS is a laser printer manufactured and sold by Apple. This printer is the next version of the LaserWriter 16/600 PS, it is equipped with a faster processor, more memory and is mechanically better in that it prints also on the back of the pages without having to force the customer reinsert the pages by hand.

This high-performance laser printer provides fast, outstanding results for near-photographic black-and-white printing. It's designed for small workgroups of Mac OS and Windows users. The LaserWriter 12/640 PS can print at 12 pages per minute and provides 600- by 600-dpi resolution. It offers extremely flexible and versatile paper-handling capabilities--including optional duplex (double-sided) printing and the ability to print to a wide variety of paper (even card stock) and other media. Features

Prints up to 12 pages per minute. Provides 600- by 600-dpi resolution with FinePrint standard; optional PhotoGrade allows printing images at the equivalent of 1,200 dpi.* Includes 4MB of memory; expandable to 64MB using 72-pin SIMMS. Allows two-sided printing without re-sorting through duplex option. Works with the Mac OS, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Windows 95, and UNIX operating systems. Includes 250-sheet cassette and 80-sheet multipurpose tray; optional 500-sheet cassette and envelope cassette. Comes with Adobe PostScript Level 2 and PCL 5 for application compatibility. Is Energy Star compliant.

  • PhotoGrade requires a minimum of 12 megabytes of RAM installed in the printer.

Apple's Competitive Advantage The Apple LaserWriter 12/640 PS provides many of the same features of the HP 5M at a lower price. In addition, it comes with more fonts, supports more paper types, and includes Adobe Type Manager and Adobe Acrobat Reader (in the United States) software for the Mac OS and Windows systems. Apple's PhotoGrade technology allows images to print at the equivalent of more than 1,200 dpi. While the LaserWriter 12/640 PS supports autosensing and autoswitching Ethernet, LocalTalk, and bidirectional parallel ports, the Lexmark printer comes only with the standard 10BASE-T Ethernet; coax Ethernet and LocalTalk are options. The Lexmark printer uses a PostScript clone language rather than true Adobe PostScript Level 2.
