IRC is a tool. Like all tools, it can be misused. Like all tools, sometimes it can save a lot of time, or help solve thorny problems.
- IRC conversations should never be taken as a substitute for on-wiki consensus. (only open discussion can lead to consensus)
- IRC conversations should never be used to circumvent assuming good faith or respecting the opinions and work of others.
- IRC can and should be used to get a quick second opinion (to avoid doing something stupid)
- IRC can and should be used to ask for technical or editing help from others (to fix things faster)
- IRC can and should be used to ask what is going on if things appear odd (to avoid things like wheel wars)
- IRC can and should be used to raise issues that should not be publicly discussed (to avoid privacy breaches)
Thus, I am an IRC fairy, meaning I think that IRC is useful and I use it.
