[edit] Olympic achievements
According to Football at the 1952 Summer Olympics, the bronze medal was won by Sweden so I don't see how he could have won a bronze medal as a member of the US team. -- Whpq (talk) 19:36, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I went directly to the Olympic site and looked up the medal table. Checking the United States entry, there are a lot of medals but none are for football, bronze or otherwise. Checking on Sweden, the listing confirms a bronze medal in football. -- Whpq (talk) 19:47, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Do you have any sources for olympic team members? This is starting to look more and more shakey. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 19:51, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Looking very shaky. I've been outside wiki-world and did find an obituary (this guy died yesterday, hence the article.) Do we have any notability criteria for Olympic athletes, regardless of the medal count? (and I agree that is indeed an untrue assertion). I suggest a massive cleanup to make it presentable to afd for a proper discussion. Keeper | 76 19:54, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Make sure you do look through the history, as I removed a whole lot of things, and you never know what you may find in there that I removed but shouldn't have (I think nothing, otherwise I wouldn't have removed it, but you never know). Seeing that all professional athletes are presumed notable for some reason, Olympic athletes would probably be aswell. I'll see if I can find anything on that. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 19:57, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Martin. I meant to add a link. The article, at creation was a substantial copy of a myspace page, therefore completely unreliable. But, the dude existed, he did play US olympic soccer, which at the time in 1952, was the highest level of soccer. I can't find the obit link, but my search has been Lawrence Surock+soccer, Larry Surock +Olympic soccer, Larry Surock+Helsinki. Keeper | 76 19:59, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, that is the worst looking myspace page I have ever seen. But on topic, I do think olympic athletes are notable, and support keeping the article. I do think keep would be the outcome, but if you feel strongly about it, i'd say put it up. An AfD more or less is not generaly a problem. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:04, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Other achievements
What exactly is (are?) the "New York Giants Farm Team (Florida)"? Does anyone have a clue? I do suppose it is a soccer team, as he was a soccer player, but I don't realy get the new york Florida connection. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:05, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- A farm team (if it's anything like Baseball in the US) is basically a team where players are groomed to join a higher level team. So, it's a team that is part of a larger organization basically. Example. Say I play baseball, and I'm drafted by the Minnesota Twins. Even though I'm part of the Twins, I might play on their "farm team" in Ft. Myers, Florida (yes, there really is one there.). Hope that helps. Keeper | 76 20:24, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Referencing
I've added references for information,a nd included some additional info I stumbled across looking for refs. The claim of 17 goals looks very suspicious, and even though it is memtioned in the Sun obituary, I'm discounting it. 17 goals in a football tournament for a team that likely didn't advance very far seems a bit dubious. -- Whpq (talk) 20:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- According to http://www.rsssf.com/tableso/ol1952f.html Team USA didn't score at all. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:21, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for confirming my suspicions with facts. I suspect that the information is from tall tales he told his kids and grand kids. -- Whpq (talk) 20:25, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- thanks for finding the Baltimore Sun obit. HA! the editor says he scored 17 goals in helsinki. (sure he did. in practice before the game started...) Maybe he was using the Myspace page for his source too :-). 40 lashes for the BSun editor! Keeper | 76 20:30, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, within minutes we have created one of the best referenced stubs I have ever seen. Go team NPP! Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:32, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
