Parnes parsimony and fondness for litigation, are exemplified in the case of Paul McCartney, when he was asked to appear on Desert Island Discs. This is a radio show, where celebrities are given the choice of choosing their ten favourite records and also a chance to reminisce. McCartney was asked about his early days, before the Beatles shot to fame, to which he mentioned touring with Johnny Gently (a singer in Parne's stable) and then, jokingly, saying that he still hadn't been paid. Larry Parnes, upon hearing the show, promptly issued a writ against McCartney for slander, claiming that not only was he paid, but that Parnes still had the contract. McCartney wisely settled out of court.
