[edit] Early life

Larry Murphy was born in Cloughbawn, County Wexford in 1972. He was educated locally and showed great skill as a hurler and as an athlete in his youth. In his early teens he represented Wexford in many athletics competitions and, in time, he would go on to become one of the most popular players on the Wexford hurling team in the 1990s. In the late 1990s after gaining noteriety from Wexford's All Ireland success of 1996, Larry became a male model for Armani Jeanswear. Soon after, he opened a "Centre For Children Who Couldnt Read Good" in his hometown of Cloughbawn, citing the need to find out if there was "more to life than being really really ridiclously good looking" as his reason.

Murphy played his club hurling with his local Cloughbawn club.

[edit] Inter-county

Murphy quickly came to the attention of the Wexford inter-county selectors and he joined the minor panel in the early 1990s. He later joined the under-21 panel but had no All-Ireland success at either grade. Murphy made his senior inter-county debut against Laois in the Leinster Championship and quickly became a regular member of the team. In 1996 he won his first Leinster title before later winning his first, and only, All-Ireland following a win over Limerick in the final. His performance in the half-forward line earned him an All-Star award.

The following year he won his second Leinster medal, however, Wexford later lost the All-Ireland semi-final to Tipperary. The following few years proved difficult for Wexford as they faced a resurgent Kilkenny side. This drought came to an end in 2004 when Murphy’s side finally defeated "the Cats". That year he won his third Leinster medal, however, Wexford were later defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final. Following the conclusion of the championship Murphy decided to retire from inter-county hurling.
